Just two years after Apple introduced its first-ever iPad - which was an almost immediate success - it launched its miniature version, the iPad mini. In today's article, we will briefly summarize why and how the smaller iPad has become so popular, just like its larger sibling.

It goes on sale right from the end of November 2012 iPad mini the first generation, which reduces the size and price of the groundbreaking tablet from Apple's workshop. At the time of its release, the iPad mini was the fifth iPad to come out of the Cupertino company's workshop. The diagonal of its display was 7,9". The new iPad mini was widely praised by experts and journalists as the most affordable tablet in Apple's history to date, although some complained about the lack of a Retina display.

The iPad mini immediately became a huge hit. Apple sold millions of them immediately after their launch, surpassing the sales of the full-size iPad that was introduced at the same time. The tablet saw the light of day when the current iPhone 5 had a 4” display, and some customers demanded larger dimensions. From the arrival of the iPhone 6 but the world was still a few years apart, making the iPad mini a great addition to their existing Apple smartphone.

The small dimensions of the iPad mini had their advantages, but also disadvantages. The display's 1024 x 768 pixel resolution provided a density of just 163 ppi, while the iPhone 5's display offered a density of 326 ppi. The performance of the Apple A5 chip together with 512 MB of RAM made the iPad mini only a very weak competitor against the powerful tablets that Google and Amazon were putting on the market at the time. Fortunately, the improvement did not take long. The original iPad mini lasted only a year in Apple's offer. The second generation model was launched in November 2013 with a faster processor.

The iPad mini of the second generation also sold relatively well, and interest in it declined significantly only when Apple launched its first phablets, i.e. the iPhone 6 and especially the 6 Plus. The third and fourth generations of the iPad mini saw the light of day at yearly intervals, the iPad mini was only launched in 2019. So far, the last iPad mini – i.e. its sixth generation – is still on sale, and was introduced last year.
