The Apple Watch has been part of Apple's product portfolio for several years. The presentation of their first (respectively zero) generation took place in September 2014, when Tim Cook called the Apple Watch "a new chapter in the history of Apple". However, users had to wait until April 2015 for them to go on sale.

Seven long months of waiting paid off after all. On April 24, 2015, some lucky people could finally strap a brand new Apple smartwatch to their wrists. But the history of the Apple Watch goes back even further than 2014 and 2015. Although it was not the first product of the post-Jobs era, it was the first ever product from Apple whose product line was launched after Jobs' death as a complete novelty. Wearable electronics, such as various fitness bracelets or smart watches, were on the rise at the time. "It was becoming clear that technology was moving into our bodies," said Alan Dye, who worked at Apple in the human interface department. "It occurred to us that the natural place that has its historical justification and significance is the wrist," added.

It is said that work on the first concepts of the future Apple Watch started around the time when the iOS 7 operating system was being developed. After the designs "on paper", the time came slowly to work with the physical product. Apple hired a number of experts in smart sensors and gave them the task of thinking about a smart device, which will, however, be significantly different from the iPhone. Today we know the Apple Watch primarily as a fitness and health accessory, but at the time of the release of their first generation, Apple also partly thought of them as a luxury fashion accessory. However, the $17 Apple Watch Edition was not as successful as it was originally expected to be, and Apple eventually went in a different direction with its smartwatch. At the time the Apple Watch was being designed, it was also referred to as a "computer on the wrist".

Apple finally officially introduced its Apple Watch to the world on September 9, 2014 during the Keynote, which also featured the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The event took place at The Flint Center for the Performing Arts in Cupertino, California – practically on the same stage where Steve Jobs introduced the iMac G1998 in 3 and the first ever Macintosh in 1984. Seven years after the introduction of the first generation, the Apple Watch is still considered a breakthrough and revolutionary product, where Apple is constantly striving for more and more innovations. Progress is being made especially in terms of health functions – the new Apple Watch models can take an ECG recording, monitor sleep and many other things. In connection with future generations of the Apple Watch, there is speculation about, for example, non-invasive methods of measuring blood sugar or measuring blood pressure.
