In the second half of May 2006 (and not only) residents of New York's 5th Avenue and the surrounding area finally had the opportunity to see the newly built Apple brand store. Until then, no one uninitiated had the slightest idea what the upcoming Apple Store would look like - all the important events were hidden under opaque black plastic all the time. The workers removed it just one day before the official opening of the store, which soon became an icon among the Apple Story.

May has always been a big month for the Apple Story. For example, almost exactly five years before the 5th Avenue store was introduced to the world, Apple opened its first ever store its first retail stores in McLean, Virginia and California's Glendale Galleria. In 2006, however, Apple was already ready to move a step further.

Steve Jobs was also fully involved in the entire retail sales planning strategy, and he left his indelible mark on the 5th Avenue branch as well. "It was effectively Steve's store," recalls Ron Johnson, Apple's former senior vice president of retail.

“We opened our first New York store in 2002 in SoHo, and it's success exceeded all our dreams. We are now proud to introduce our second store in the city, located on 5th Avenue. It is an amazing facility with excellent service in an ideal location. We believe that the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue will become one of the most popular destinations for people from New York and around the world." Steve Jobs said at the time.

Jobs hired the Bohlin Cywinski Jackson firm for architectural work, which had, for example, the sprawling Seattle residence of Bill Gates in its portfolio. But he is also responsible for the Apple Store in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and on London's Regent Street.

The premises of the store were located below ground level and could be reached by a glass elevator. The architectural firm was faced with the difficult task of creating something at street level that would entice customers to enter from the very beginning. The giant glass cube, which in its elegance, simplicity, minimalism and purity was in complete harmony with Apple's philosophy and distinctive design, proved to be the perfect step.

The Apple store on New York's 5th Avenue soon began to be considered one of the most beautiful and original Apple Stores, but also one of the most photographed objects in New York.

Its grand opening was attended by a number of well-known personalities from many fields - among the visitors were, for example, actor Kevin Bacon, singer Beyoncé, musician Kanye West, director Spike Lee and about a dozen other celebrities.
