At the beginning of June 2013, Apple passed a significant milestone in the history of its iOS operating system. At that time, the App Store for iOS was celebrating its fifth anniversary since its launch, and the earnings of app developers had reached the ten billion dollar mark. Company CEO Tim Cook announced this during the WWDC 2013 developer conference, adding that developer revenue from the iOS App Store has doubled over the previous year.

During the conference, Cook also revealed, among other things, that the earnings of developers from the iOS App Store is three times higher than the income from App Stores for all other platforms combined. With a respectable 575 million user accounts registered in the App Store at the time, Apple had more payment cards available than any other company on the Internet. At that time, 900 thousand applications were available in the App Store, the number of downloads reached a total of 50 billion.

This was a very significant success for Apple. When the App Store officially opened its virtual doors in July 2008, it did not enjoy much support from Apple. Steve Jobs didn't initially like the idea of an online app store - the then Apple boss wasn't keen on the idea of users having the opportunity to download and use third-party apps. He changed his mind when it became clear how much the App Store could actually earn the Cupertino company. The company charged a 30% commission from each sold application.

This year, the App Store celebrates twelve years since its launch. Apple has already paid out more than $100 billion to developers, and the online app store for iOS devices attracts around 500 million visitors a week. The App Store was surprisingly profitable even during the coronavirus crisis.
