Yesterday, Google released a statement that raised many a user of the YouTube platform out of their chair. As it seems, even Google intends to experiment with the sequence of posts (in this case, videos) that are displayed to users in their own feed. The company is currently testing this feature, but even the limited number of preliminary impressions is clear – users (and also video creators) strongly dislike this approach.

We are used to this on social networks, as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram practice a similar approach. The posts in your feed (or on your timeline, if you prefer) are not arranged chronologically, but according to a kind of importance assigned to individual posts by a special algorithm of this and that company. The problem is that the algorithm is usually worthless and the posts and their sequence are such a mess. It very often happens that together with the current posts, the ones that are a few days old also appear, while others do not appear at all. And something very similar has now begun to be tested within YouTube.

The company wants to remove the classic chronological overview of videos from the channels you subscribe to and with the help of a special algorithm wants to "personalize" your feed. Whatever that means, we can almost certainly expect it to be a disaster. The new "personalized" list, which in the case of selected users replaces the classic chronological breakdown, takes into account the videos and channels you watch and adjusts what you see in the feed accordingly. Only videos from channels you subscribe to appear there. However, their number is limited and there is basically a 100% probability that you will miss some video, because YouTube will not offer it to you, because the algorithm evaluated it that way...

If you are lucky enough and your YouTube account is not affected by this change, you can test the effectiveness of the algorithm in the recommended tab, where YouTube will offer you videos based on your user history. You probably won't find just what you'd expect here. Users fear (rightfully so) that this move will "disconnect" them from the channels they watch. By doing away with the chronological feed and replacing it with a selection that some algorithm does for you, you can very easily skip a video from a selected channel. All it takes is for the new system to be displeased in some way (for whatever reason)...
