The official application of the video portal YouTube has received a significant update, within which users of newer iPads finally received support for multitasking in the form of Slide Over and Split View. What is surprising, however, is that YouTube still does not offer picture-in-picture, i.e. the ability to play a video in a small window overlapping another application.
Even so, the news will surely please many people. Thanks to multitasking, which came to the iPad with iOS 9, it is possible to run two applications side by side in the Split View function on the iPad Air 2, mini 4 and Pro. Thanks to Slide Over, which is also supported by older iPads, it is then at least possible to slide out a special bar from the side and quickly access another application. For parallel running on half the screen, or but to run in the sidebar, the given application must be prepared by the developers, and the engineers from Google approached this adaptation of YouTube only now.
YouTube then comes with one more novelty, which, however, does not affect Czech customers too much. Subscribers of the YouTube RED premium service, which is not yet available here, can now enjoy the ability to play sound in the background of the application. Unfortunately, for regular users, video playback stops when they exit the app, even after the latest update.

I have a feeling that the picture in picture function is only available via quick time player, right?
Yes. If you launch a YouTube video embedded on the web, PIP works, but not directly in the YouTube app.
Yes, I know that, but I thought that the picture in picture function was limited only to the quick time player, i.e. the developer cannot add it to the application, provided that he does not accept the fact that he will have to use quick time.. Which means, for example, giving up the option of choosing the video quality
If I understand you correctly, that is not the case. For example, the aforementioned Tubex PIP application can and at the same time offers the option to manually change the video quality.
Yes, but does it also offer the option of picture in picture? I personally don't have an iPad, so I have no way to test it..
PIP = Picture In Picture :-)
:)
Nice tip on the app :-). Thanks
Well, there are a lot of Tubex, but the most downloaded one (From Baslas Lian) seems to be able to do everything described. That is Change the quality, PIP, change the playback speed, etc... It just has an ugly and disruptive advertisement when you are in the application and do not have a video in fullscreen mode.
But what is very interesting!!! When you turn off the iPad using the power button, the text files will stop playing. But if you wake it up and play on the main lock screen, you can turn off the display and have YouTube Red :-D.
Why does the Stream.cz application support PIP a long time ago and YouTube still nothing? What is the problem?
I would probably guess it has something to do with paid YouTube Red. One advantage there is the ability to "play in the background" where the video doesn't pause when you move to another app, PIP would eliminate that advantage. On the other hand, Split View is also close to that…
That is, they added half of the functions of the Tubex application... Senk ya google
