If you have ever encountered a computer on the Windows platform, it most likely ran Windows Defender security system, which is a kind of basic protection tool implemented directly into the operating system. This "antivirus" is sufficient for the vast majority of users and has become more and more popular in recent years, mainly due to its quality. Microsoft has now announced that Windows Defender is heading to macOS as well, albeit in a slightly modified form.

First of all, Microsoft renamed Windows Defender to Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) and then announced its arrival on the macOS platform. Although the operating system is much less susceptible to harmful viruses such as malware, etc., it is not completely perfect. Relatively common exploits used on macOS include fake programs pretending to be something else, fraudulent browser add-ons, or unauthorized applications that do things they shouldn't on the system.

Microsoft Defender ATP should offer comprehensive system protection to all Mac users with Sierra, High Sierra and Mojave operating systems. Currently, Microsoft offers this product mainly to corporate customers, which is the whole purpose of this project.

The Redmond-based company targets businesses that use both the Windows platform and, to some extent, macOS as part of their IT. After the Office package, this is another software that the company can offer and, in the end, also offer corporate support for it.

It is not yet clear how quickly and when the MD ATP offer will be extended to other customers, as it stands it looks like Microsoft is "testing the corporate waters" for now. Companies interested in a security feature from Microsoft se they can apply about the trial version.
