The employees of Google (respectively Alphabet) decided to form a global coalition to help especially workers from countries with less than ideal conditions. The coalition is still in its infancy, so it is impossible to say with precision what its activities will be. In today's summary of events from the IT world, we will also talk about the communication platform WhatsApp and the massive outflow of users, and we will also talk about the new feature on Instagram.

WhatsApp is losing millions of users daily

Not so long ago, a heated discussion broke out regarding the new rules for using the WhatsApp communication platform. Although the new rules have not yet been put into effect, the aforementioned news resulted in a mass exodus of users of the hitherto popular WhatsApp and their mass migration to similar services such as Signal or Telegram. The implementation of the new terms of use was finally postponed until February 8, but some damage had already been done. The Signal platform recorded a respectable increase of 7,5 million users during the first three weeks of January, Telegram boasts even 25 million users, and in both cases these are clearly "defectors" from WhatsApp. Analytics company App Annie has released a report showing that WhatsApp has dropped from seventh to twenty-third place in the UK's most downloaded apps. Signal, which until recently wasn't even in the top XNUMX downloaded apps in the UK, has soared to the top of the chart. Niamh Sweeney, WhatsApp's director of public policy, said the new rules were aimed at setting new features related to business communications and introducing more transparency.

Instagram and new tools for creators

Instagram is currently working on a new feature aimed at business owners and influencers. A special panel should soon be added to the application, which will provide users with all the tools for managing a corporate Instagram. The feature will be available only to owners of business and creative accounts, and users will be able to use it to monitor, for example, their account statistics, work with monetization and partnership tools, but also study various guides, tips, tricks and tutorials.

Google Employee Coalition

Google employees from all over the world have decided to unite in a global alliance. The newly formed coalition, called Alpha Global, consists of a total of 13 members representing Google employees from ten different countries around the world, including the United States of America, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. The Alpha Global Coalition works with the UNI Global Union federation, which aims to represent 20 million people around the world, including Amazon workers. Parul Koul, executive chairman of the Alphabet Workers Union and a software engineer at Google, said unionization is especially important in countries with high inequality. The newly formed coalition does not yet have a legally binding agreement with Google. In the foreseeable future, the coalition will elect a steering committee.
