In mid-January, Samsung introduced its top line of Galaxy S24 smartphones, with the Galaxy S24 Ultra being the most equipped model. Although the South Korean manufacturer was really inspired by Apple and its iPhone 15 Pro Max, it still tries to keep its face.

After many years, Samsung has lost its lead in the number of global smartphone sales, but if you look at its best-selling models, these are the low or mid-range Galaxy A series. In the TOP 10 smartphones, we can only find iPhones, and the currently available Samsung phones, its top portfolio of the Galaxy S series does not enter the ranking. It may also indicate that when someone wants to pay tens of thousands for a phone, they are more likely to reach for an iPhone.

Of course, we won't say that it's a shame, but we have to admit that Samsung phones can do it - that is, if we're talking about the top ones. The Galaxy S24 Ultra has its own design, which the company already established with the S22 series, but even Apple does not innovate every year. This year we saw only minor changes, especially in the display. It is finally not curved on its sides but straight, thanks to which you can use this entire surface for the S Pen.

Is the S Pen the main thing that sets the Ultra apart?

If we leave the operating system aside, the S Pen is what sets the Galaxy S24 Ultra apart from the rest of the world, including Apple products. Samsung bet on something that could appeal to many, but is not common. It's something that you don't need for life, and in fact you easily forget that you have it on your phone, but the new dimension of control is fun. We haven't seen much here since the Galaxy S22 Ultra, but you'll definitely appreciate the S Pen when working with Galaxy AI, whether you're marking and summarizing texts, enlarging and moving objects in a photo or using Circle to Search.

Samsung, like Apple in the Ultra, bet on titanium in the iPhone 15 Pro. But here it's probably just for durability and ego, because the weight didn't move here due to the fact that the previous frame was aluminum. But Samsung polished it to look like the steel of previous iPhone Pro models. There are no reservations here. Everything is precisely processed, including the front (even more glare-reducing) and rear glass. The front one, by the way, should be the most durable that Android phones can have. Of course, we hear that all the time.

The South Korean manufacturer was also inspired by cameras. So the Ultra has four, which is nothing new, but it has replaced the 10x periscope with a 5x periscope. So Apple clearly sets the trends. But the new Ultra can still take photos even at a 10x zoom, and that's really great, because the sensor is 50 MPx. There is software magic involved here, but the result works. So the company also kept the 100x Space Zoom, which is more just for fun.

The Galaxy S24 is rightfully the best

System-wise, the news in the One UI 6.1 superstructure is also a lot like iOS. Always On shows the wallpaper even when the display is off, if you want, you can take photos up to 24 MPx if you want. There are many copied details, for example in the area of the battery. But it's actually good for iPhone users. If he wanted to switch for some reason, it would be all the easier. If we ignore the shape of both devices, the inside is simply more and more similar to the iOS environment with each subsequent version of Samsung's superstructure.

Bottom line, if I didn't have to use an iPhone, Samsung's Ultra would be the phone I'd definitely reach for. I don't have to and I don't want to, because the S Pen is just one and relatively small argument. We should get artificial intelligence in iOS 18, when Galaxy AI is still half-baked anyway. But the fact is that the Galaxy S24 Ultra deserves to be the top of the Android world. It has the performance, cameras, appearance, options and system.

But the device itself is nothing new and suffers from the same ailment as the iPhone – that is, if you have a previous model, nothing forces you to update the device. There are upgrades, but only evolutionary ones. The revolution may be Galaxy AI, but Samsung will bring that to last year's Galaxy S23 series as well. Personally, I wish Samsung the best of luck, because Apple's money is getting more and more expensive, and it should have its fingers crossed to catch up. Unfortunately, with its current dominance of iPhones, it doesn't look too likely that will happen. So we will continue to see small increases in hardware and price, without any major steps. So like this: let's see what Apple AI will actually bring.
