Apple picker Press Release: Western Digital has announced the launch of its second generation of UFS 3.1 storage for 5G smartphones. New memory Western Digital iNAND MC EU551 represents the high-performance storage users need to leverage their phones for growing applications such as high-definition cameras and cameras, AV/VR applications, games and 8K video.
SOCIETY IDC expects global 2021G phone shipments to reach a 5% share in 40 and grow to 69% in 2025. New networks now enable broadband availability for data transmission and offer low latency for new 5G phone experiences. Western Digital's iNAND solutions then provide high capacity and high performance in the form of internal memory that is needed for all new great applications.

Once the high-speed 5G network, sensor innovations and artificial intelligence come together, the average phone memory capacity will increase, in addition, it will be necessary to satisfy the need for higher performance to handle new multimedia possibilities." says Huibert Verhoeven, Western Digital's vice president of emerging and automotive and mobile markets, adding: "Our new UFS 3.1 iNAND solution will enable users to achieve data-rich applications and enjoy faster streaming for new ways to play, work and learn."
iNAND mobile memory® The MC EU551 is the first product built on the new Western Digital UFS 3.1 platform, which was introduced on May 26 at the conference Flash Perspective. The iNAND MC EU551 enables NAND acceleration, brings a faster driver and improved firmware solution, and has the following improvements over the previous generation, up to:
- 100% improvement in random read performance and up to 40% improvement in random write performance to support diverse workloads while running multiple applications simultaneously
- A 90% improvement in sequential writing to achieve the download speeds of 5G and Wi-Fi 6 networks. This will allow for a better performance and experience when streaming files such as 8K video, as well as improved performance for applications such as burst mode.
- 30% improvement in sequential reading, allowing applications to start faster with shorter load times and faster data upload times.
This storage is designed to meet the requirements of the JEDEC UFS 3.1 standard and uses the latest Write Booster technology, which is built on the seventh generation of SmartSLC
Western Digital. Another technology used is Host Performance Booster version 2.0 in combination with the latest advances in this standard.

The iNAND MC EU551 memory is the latest addition to the iNAND product line, trusted by all major smartphone manufacturers around the world for over a decade. As part of its work in the mobile ecosystem, Western Digital continues to work with leading SoC system designers to make UFS 3.1 a reference solution for smartphones, offering manufacturers a pre-tested solution.
Availability
Western Digital iNAND MC EU551 UFS 3.1 EFD memory is available in a test version. Serial production is planned for July 2021 in capacities of 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB.
