Experts from Carnegie Mellon University managed to create an application that is able to detect a possible disease of COVID-19 just by listening to the user's cough and speech. A web application called The COVID Voice Detector uses voice recordings to detect possible symptoms of the disease. It is, in a sense, the most affordable testing method currently available. At the moment, however, the application is still in an experimental phase.

Getting tested for COVID-19 these days is not easy. There are long queues for tests, some applicants are rejected, and testing "on your own" can be quite expensive for some. The application The COVID Voice Detector could thus become a useful tool for a kind of preliminary orientation testing. The creators of the app state that their goal is to develop a testing system for COVID-19 that works on the principle of voice detection, and to which the largest possible part of the public could have access.

The app works really simply – it prompts the user to record a series of voice inputs, cough three times, and then answer a few questions about their health and symptoms. With the help of artificial intelligence, the application carefully analyzes all data, including voice recordings, and provides the user with an appropriate rating on a scale from one to ten. The whole process takes about five minutes. The application is completely free. However, its creators emphasize that this is still an experimental phase, and that the tool should in no way serve as a substitute for a full-fledged medical test for COVID-19. The app will continuously improve with user input, improving the symptom recognition algorithm. The COVID Voice Detector has not yet passed FDA approval.
