Among the important native Apple applications for Mac is also Messages. It offers a full-fledged ability to write and receive messages similar to your iOS devices. Today's article is more for beginners and new Mac owners who don't know much about Messages yet.

Getting started and creating reports

You can use Messages on a Mac to send text and multimedia messages and iMessage, just like on an iPhone. You must be signed in on your Mac with the same Apple ID you use on your iPhone. If your messages don't sync even after signing in, launch the Messages app on your Mac, click Messages -> Preferences on the toolbar, and check the Settings tab to see if you have iCloud messaging enabled. To start a conversation, click on the new message symbol in the upper left panel of the Messages window (see gallery), enter a contact and you can start writing.

You can easily add an attachment to a message written on a Mac by simply dragging it from the Desktop, Finder, or other location. To add content from an iPhone or iPad to a message on a Mac, click File -> Paste from iPhone or iPad on the toolbar at the top of the Mac screen. In the lower part of the application window there is a field for entering text - here you can add emoticons in addition to writing, after clicking on the icon on the far right you can start recording a voice message. To start a group conversation, start by creating a new message and enter individual contacts in the top field, separated by commas. If a group conversation has four or more members, you can remove any of them by Ctrl-clicking their name and clicking Remove from Conversation.

Additional message options

After you start a conversation in Messages on your Mac, you can click Details in the upper-right corner to take additional actions, such as turning on read receipts or turning off notifications. In the upper right corner of the details window, you will then find the option to share your screen and start a FaceTime voice or video call. In this window, you also see all the attachments that you and the given contact have sent to each other. You can view a contact's business card by clicking on a contact's name at the top of the message window. If you have a Mac with macOS Sierra and later, you can respond to messages using the Tapback feature. Press and hold the Ctrl key and click on the message bubble you want to respond to and choose Tapback. After that, all you have to do is select the desired reaction. To delete a message or conversation, click on it while pressing and holding the Ctrl key and select Delete from the menu. Deleting the message and the entire conversation is irreversible.
