Every year, a new operating system for our smartphones, be it iPhones with iOS or other manufacturers using Google's Android. But in the case of Apple, we haven't seen anything different for many years. A lot of water has already leaked since iOS 7. Nothing is now trying it on Android, which has shown the environment of its upcoming smartphone.

Although even on iOS it is possible to slightly change the visual environment through Shortcuts, on Android you really have a free hand. E.g. Through its Galaxy Store, Samsung offers a number of themes, icon sets and even changing the lock screen or Always On display. However, you can also install the so-called Launcher, which has a simple functionality, on devices from other manufacturers. Depending on what skin sets you download to it, you can also use them in the environment.

So it is not a problem for Android to look like a carousel, but also for it to resemble iOS 15 as much as possible. The company Nothing has just released its Launcher, whose first smartphone we are still waiting for, and we have to wait this year anyway. This visionary company only has the first model of its TWS headphones in its portfolio.

Nothing phone(1)

Nothing Launcher it was originally only installed on Samsung Galaxy S21, S22 and Google Pixel 5 and 6 devices, but now it is available for all devices with Android 11 and later. It includes a number of functions and features that will be the core of the upcoming phone, which so far is called the Nothing phone(1). But why are we writing about him on Jablíčkář? Because it initially seemed like a breath of fresh air in the field of mobile operating systems. But in reality, it's not really such a bomb. After all, did anyone expect anything else?

Of course, it is necessary to wait for the actual implementation of the superstructure into the phone's own solution, so it is quite possible that it will really be something else in the final, but on the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G it simply looks like a minimalist environment that does not deviate from anything, does not surprise and does not really captivate (ok, the changing wallpapers are nice, but it's definitely not enough).

Max Icons and Max Folders

The main thing, of course, is how it actually looks. The superstructure is therefore minimalist, which is what the phone itself should be. It should be intuitive to use, so there is an option to enlarge the icons and their individual folders. Just hold your finger on the icon or folder and select the magnifying glass icon. The result is so contradictory. The icons are rather unsightly, but the folders are nice because they don't need to be opened and you can launch the application directly from their enlarged field.

Another feature of the Launcher is the ability to add clock and time widgets in the Nothing design language to your home screen. Yeah, they're nice, but would that be some sort of revolution? But already when setting up the Launcher, you will encounter a typical text font, which is really pleasant. If it goes through the whole environment, it could really be something else, but it isn't yet. The Launcher itself is referred to as beta, and apart from what has been said, it still slightly changes the application menu with their automatic alphabetical sorting, and that's all.

When Nothing Is Enough

And it's somehow not enough. If this is supposed to piss someone off, it hardly ever will. On the other hand, it's a great marketing move. If the brand was to be talked about in wider circles in connection with its first phone, then this task was accomplished perfectly. After all, this article for the apple website also proves it.

So why are we writing about Nothing? Simply because, even though he's not doing well with his Launcher so far, there's a clear effort to bring something new to the trodden waters of operating systems (which we hope will happen with his phone as well). Both Apple and Google have more or less stagnated not only in adding news to their OS, but also in its appearance. While it's true that Google has attempted at least a little innovation with its Material You design, it's perhaps too little. So let's hope that Nothing phone(1) will be really different, and that the final form of the environment will correspond to that otherness.
