Today, Samsung introduced a trio of its mid-range A-series phones. The most equipped model here is the Galaxy A54 5G, which is supposed to be an affordable alternative to the top-of-the-line S series, from which it also borrows a lot. Logically, it is also targeted directly against the iPhone SE.

In Apple's portfolio, the iPhone SE is considered to be the cheapest solution, although the September price increase definitely did not help it, because you can currently buy it for a really unnecessarily high 13 CZK, for the 990GB version. Even though Samsung released its A-series phones only today, it already held an event for journalists on Monday, where we were also invited and were able to get acquainted with the entire trio of phones. In our case, only the most equipped one is worth mentioning.

The glass appearance destroys the plastic

If we look at the design side, the appearance of the Galaxy A54 5G is clearly based on the top-of-the-range Galaxy S23, where the camera module has disappeared and there are only three lenses that (really massively) protrude above the surface of the back. Compared to last year's Galaxy A53 5G model, the depth camera has disappeared, which doesn't really matter. Perhaps the most interesting thing here is the use of glass.

The entire back side is actually covered with glass, which brings Samsung's most equipped Ačko closer not only to the Galaxy S23 series, but also to the iPhone SE, which also has a glass back. This is Gorilla Glass 5. But where Apple goes all the way and provides the iPhone with wireless charging, it is simply missing here. So it is only a matter of design.

Unfortunately, the whole look is clearly spoiled by the plastic frame. It is matte, which evokes the matte aluminum of iPhones, but it is not difficult to recognize that it is not exactly metal here. It's a shame and the second minus for an otherwise pretty good phone.

Display with adaptive refresh rate

The iPhone SE display probably needs no comment. However, in the case of the Galaxy A54 5G, it is really good, because it brings to the middle class one element that was the privilege of only the highest class. It is a 6,4" FHD+ Super AMOLED display with an adaptive refresh rate. Although it is very limited, it is here and can save the device's battery but at the same time offer maximum fluidity in using the device.

So the base is 60Hz, but once there is some interaction on the display across the entire environment, it automatically increases to 120Hz. There's nothing in between, so it doesn't change based on movement speed and just switches between 60 or 120 Hz. Even so, the iPhone SE can make you dream about it, as well as OLED technology. By the way, Samsung's new product has a fingerprint reader in the display.

Cameras with automatic night mode

We can't judge the quality because the samples were with pre-production software, but it's obvious that Samsung's solution will put the iPhone SE in your pocket. There is a 50MPx main, 12MPx ultra-wide-angle and 5MPx macro lens, while the front camera is 32MPx. Samsung has also worked on the software, so there is no shortage of automatic night mode and improved video recording.

If we were to evaluate completely unbiased, the Galaxy A54 5G has quite a lot of potential. Its equipment is great for the price range, so if we could see this in a lightweight iPhone, it would be absolutely great. At first glance, Samsung's novelty is brought down by the bad plastic frame, which is a clear shame even in view of the glass back. We would probably get over the lack of wireless charging somehow. The display is not among the top, but again, considering the iPhone SE and the price starting at CZK 11 for the 999GB version, it is clear who will emerge from this race as the winner.
