The developers at Yacht Club Games aren't afraid to try new things. How else to explain their move away from the safety of the well-functioning formula of the Shovel Knight platformer series and into the dark, dangerous waters of the puzzle genre? At the same time, they did not settle for anything less than a game that willingly balances on the edge between a relaxing puzzle game and an uncompromising roguelite. That's exactly what their new Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon is all about.

Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon uses a concept as old as the genre itself. From the top of the screen, different types of pieces fall onto the playing field and your task is to gradually get rid of them. From one of the ten available heroes, you move under the two-dimensional field and interact with the pieces. Some you'll destroy, some will heal you, and some are enemies that can quickly get you into big trouble if you're not careful. Between the blocks you will always find chests full of treasures and especially locked doors that, when unlocked, will lead you to the next level, mostly inspired by one of the levels from the platformer series.

At the same time, the difficulty of the individual levels classically increases linearly. The peculiarity of the game is that it gives you a choice of how to deal with such a classic fact. You can either choose the classic puzzle gameplay, where Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon gives you unlimited attempts to beat them, or go roguelite mode, where losing all your lives means restarting from the very beginning.
