It used to be a certain standard that apps were either completely free or for a one-time fee. Today, this is no longer the case, and many developers pay for their applications in the form of subscriptions. After all, Apple itself convinced them to take this step, which we described in more detail in the article The App Store is changing and so is the way you pay for apps. In order to get even more users to subscribe, Apple is now introducing new tools for developers, thanks to which they will be able to offer various discounts and promotions.

Changes will occur with the arrival of iOS 12.2, macOS 10.14.4 and tvOS 12.2. It is after the release of these versions, which are currently in the beta testing phase, that developers will be able to use new functions, after implementing them in their applications, they will be able to offer discounted subscriptions to new and existing users. For example, once a customer cancels their subscription, they will automatically be offered a good deal to renew it again. There will be several variants and the developers will be able to test up to 10 different types of promotions.

The discounted subscription offer for recently unsubscribed users will be divided into three main categories:

  • Free: The customer gets a subscription for a certain period completely free of charge - for example, 30 days free, then CZK 99 per month
  • Payment during: The customer will have a discounted subscription for a certain period of time - for example, the first three months for CZK 39 per month, then for CZK 199 per month
  • Payment in advance: The customer pays a one-time price for a certain period – for example, CZK 199 for half a year, after that

Thanks to the new feature, developers will even be able to identify those users who have recently canceled auto-renewal and their subscription will soon expire. It is thanks to special offers that the probability that they will win back their customers will increase. In addition, the feature will be completely automatic - once the discounted price ends, the user will be charged the full amount of the subscription, and the developer will not be forced to modify anything.

Developers can prepare for the changes now. They can already create discount offers in App Store Connect and through the beta version of Xcode 10.2 they can implement the new StoreKit API in their applications.
