Qualcomm president Cristiano Amon said at the Snapdragon Tech Summit this week that the company is working with Apple to release an iPhone with 5G connectivity as soon as possible. The main goal of the renewed partnership between the two companies is to release the device on time, most likely in the autumn of next year. Amon called the release of the 5G iPhone as soon as possible the number one priority in the relationship with Apple.

Amon went on to say that due to the need to release the phone on time, the first 5G iPhones will use Qualcomm modems, but not all front-end RF modules may be used. They include a circuit between components such as the antenna and the receiver, which is important for amplifying the signal from different networks. Apple is very likely to use its own technology and components in addition to modems from Qualcomm for its 5G smartphones next year. Apple has resorted to this step in previous years as well, but this time, in order to connect to the 5G networks of Verizon and AT&T operators, it cannot do without antennas from Qualcomm for millimeter waves.

According to analysts, all iPhones that Apple will release next year will have 5G connectivity, while selected models will also offer support for millimeter waves and sub-6GHz bands. Millimeter waves represent the fastest 5G technology, but they have limited range and will likely only be available in major cities, while the slower sub-6GHz band will also be available in suburban and rural areas.

In April of this year, Apple and Qualcomm managed to settle their years-long legal dispute and conclude a joint agreement. One of the reasons why Apple agreed to this agreement is also the fact that Intel was not able to meet the requirements of the Californian company in this regard. Intel sold most of its modem division already this July. According to Amon, Qualcomm's contract with Apple is for several years.
