QR codes are a very useful thing. URL links are most often spread through them, but you can also include, for example, an event to add to your calendar and much more. You can use third-party apps or various online tools to generate QR codes, but you can also create a simple, useful shortcut on your Mac for this purpose.

With the help of this useful shortcut, you will be able to easily and instantly generate a QR code on your Mac at any time, which will lead to the web page of your choice. All you need is the native Shortcuts app and Safari open on your Mac.

  • First of all, launch the native Shortcuts app on your Mac. Then click the "+" on the top bar to create a new shortcut, and name the shortcut directly.
  • Type "generate QR code" into the search field in the right-hand panel of the application window, then double-click the action to move it to the main window.
  • Subsequently, in the panel with the selected action, click on the blue Text item and enter the web address to which the code should go. You can share the QR code created in this way - the recipient just points their smartphone camera at it and goes to the website you specified.
  • Another option is to customize the shortcut to generate a QR code for you from the currently open web page in Safari, so you don't have to manually enter the address every time - just go to the website and run the shortcut.
  • In the search box on the right-hand sidebar, type Load Current Web Page from Safari. Double-click to add the action to the main window and move it to the top position.
  • If you're still working with the shortcut you created a moment ago, right-click on the web address highlighted in blue and choose Select Variable from the menu that appears. Now, as a variable, click to select the item Web page under the panel with the previous action.
  • Now move to the right panel again and type Quick View in the search box. Double-click to add this action to the main window.
  • Now, whenever you run the shortcut, the generated QR code will open to you at the same time in the quick preview window, from where you can easily and quickly share it and perform other actions.
