You can use the native Preview on Mac to connect photos to each other in a grid, and you can create animated GIFs in Keynote, for example. But if you want the process of creating both to take as little time as possible, it's best to create a special shortcut for these purposes.

Thanks to the fact that we have been able to use native Shortcuts in macOS for some time, we can also save, facilitate and speed up our work in many ways. Today we'll go through the process of creating a special shortcut that will allow you to easily and quickly create collages and animated GIFs from photos on Mac.

How to Create a Photo Collage on Mac

  • The first step, of course, is to run the native Shortcuts in the macOS environment. Click the "+" at the top of the application window to create a base for a new shortcut and give it a name of your choice.
  • In the panel on the right side of the window, enter the phrase "Select photos" in the text field and move the panel with the appropriate inscription to the main application window. Then click Show more on the panel and check the option to select more photos.
  • Move again to the right panel, where this time you enter the term Merge images in the search field, which you move to the main window again. Click Horizontal and choose To Grid. Then click Show More and enter the desired spacing. In this way, you will create a collage from the photos found in the gallery in the native Photos.

Creating a collage from files

  • But you can also create a collage from files. In the existing shortcut settings, right-click the Photos item in the main window of the Connect panel and select Shortcut Input in the menu.
  • Click the cross to remove the Photos panel from the main window. In the input settings panel, click Anything and select Delete from the menu.
  • Click on None and check the Images item in the menu.
  • At the top of the panel on the left side of the window, click the sliders icon and check the Use as quick action option.
  • Finally, at the top of the right panel, click the icon to add another step, type Save File in the search field, and double-click to add to the shortcut.
  • You can create a collage from files simply by selecting the required files, clicking on them with the right mouse button and selecting Quick Actions from the menu. Then click on the name of the shortcut you created.
  • To add a command to launch a shortcut to the list of quick actions, mark the files, right-click on them, select Quick Actions -> Custom from the menu and add the selected shortcut.
