I'm sure many of you prefer a clean install of your system over upgrading from Mac OS X Snow Leopard. If you belong to this group, you must have wondered how to do a clean install. All you have to do is create the installation media. Don't worry - it's very simple. What you will need:
- A Mac running OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6.8
- OS X Lion installation package downloaded from the Mac App Store
- blank DVD or USB stick (minimum 4 GB)
Important: After downloading the OS X Lion installation package, do not proceed with its installation!
Creating an installation DVD
- Go to your applications folder, you will see an item here Install Mac OS X. Right click and select an option Show Package Content
- After opening the package, you will see a folder SharedSupport and a file in it InstallESD.dmg
- Copy this file to your desktop
- Run the application disk Utility and click the button Burn Energy Drink
- Select a file InstallESD.dmg, which you copied to your desktop (or elsewhere)
- Insert a blank DVD into the drive and let it burn
That's all! Simple isn't it?
Creating an installation USB stick
Important: All data on your USB stick will be erased, so back it up!
The first two steps are identical to creating an installation DVD.
- Plug in the USB stick
- Run it disk Utility
- Click on your keychain in the left panel and switch to the tab Erase
- In the item Format select an option Mac OS Extended, to the item Name write any name and click the button Erase
- Go to Finder and drag the file InstallESD.dmg to the left panel in disk Utility
- Click on it to switch to the tab Restore
- To item Source drag from the left panel InstallESD.dmg
- To item Destination drag your formatted keychain
- Then just click the button Restore
Clean install of OS X Lion
Important: Before starting the actual installation, back up your data to a different drive than the one located on your Mac! It will be completely erased and formatted.
- Insert the installation DVD/USB stick into your Mac and restart it
- Hold the key while turning on or until the boot device selection menu appears
- Of course, select the installation DVD/keyboard
- In the very first step, select Czech (unless you insist on another) as your language
- Then let the installer guide you
Great guide, really thanks. I have a couple of questions, I hope it won't be a problem to answer them.
1) Is it possible to back up the data via Time Machine and then restore it only from Time Machine on a cleanly installed Lion? Or must they be backed up completely separately as files on some (necessarily external) disk?
2) If I don't want a clean installation and prefer to perform only a system update (with the preservation of data and the application), then just run the installation file directly from the Applications folder, or after transferring from the MBP to the fixed iMac?
3) And another question (I know, there are a lot of them) do you have any idea about the possibility of installing one purchased Lion distribution on different CPUs (and with different Apple IDs)?
We have 4 Macs at home and only 2 have the same Apple ID and the other 2 have different ones. Has the possibility of installing a one-time paid version of the OS "for the whole household" also applied to them?
Thanks for the reply.
And the update is really not possible from a burned DVD?
No one claims that. But I see no reason why he shouldn't go.
I have a 4GB key and when I follow the instructions, after entering the password, a message pops up from disk utility:
Restore Failure
Could not restore - Resource busy.
Does anyone know what to do with it?
Don't you have the "InstallESD.dmg" file mounted? If so, unplug it.
if you say so? screwed up? I don't know about doing anything about it
Well, if you see it in Finder among connected devices.
dikec, I definitely don't want to update, so I'll try it as soon as I have it :-)

Do you know if this procedure can also be used with the USB drive supplied with Snow Leopard for the Macbook Air? I think it is locked against writing... or how can I unlock it and rewrite it on Lion?
Thanks.
I wonder why my dmg file size is 3.74 GB?
I downloaded Lion last night... basically everything is better than it is, I'm satisfied and excited about many little things... but: how am I doing/ do I need to make a backup? I also use an ext.HDD 2TB, I have all the memory on 1 partition for mac. So I could also fit a Lion backup there, but I don't know how to do it... Thanks for the advice.
PS: I'm asking because I can't download it from the app store the second time, it says: Installed and I can't click on it again and download it... I don't understand how to do it... :-(
Late… Should have gone before installation…
The necessary Lion files for creating a backup installation media can be downloaded again even after installation from the Appstore using the combination ALT + purchased. Then you will be offered to reinstall, i.e. download the Lion installation.
It is not purchased anywhere in the APP store, but INSTALLED with the application.
The only thing that works is ALT + OS X Lion, and it only charges BUY, when I click on buy, it says that the newer version is already installed and that I should move it to the trash :))
Where exactly can lion.dmg be downloaded when it is already installed?
thanks Luk
Oh, it goes up to the purchased icon :)) I'm a llama
So far, mixed impressions.
MB 1 problem with the fact that out of nowhere the installer decided to declare it complete (downloading), so I let it go and after a while it turns out to be damaged. After removing and reinstalling (I turned off sleep) it went without a problem.
MB 2 fine, I forgot the password from my husband's account, we made a bootcd according to the instructions and now it says it failed to download the required components (mb is a newer model than mb1)
MB AIR, there the appstore is still doing paused paused
so we'll see, I still have about a dozen macs to go, so we'll see what works and what doesn't.
good day. I put lion on my dad's air and kept only the dmg file. i want to install it on my mb pro. can I somehow just update? I don't want to redo the whole mac again.
Thanks
I thought of mounting the dmg and there is Install Mac OS X Lion. couldn't it just be that way?
done. I mounted the dmg, opened Install Mac OS X Lion and installed. lion is already indexing the disk. great system :)
Addition to the instruction: When installing cleanly from a USB disk, first delete the disk, otherwise you will only be upgraded.
When restarting, hold down the "alt" key, the MAC OS X Utility will appear
see Disk Utility, Erase tab
Format: Mac OS expansions (journals)
after returning to the MAC OS X Utility, choose "Reinstall MAC OS X"
then let the plumber guide you
note on MacBookAir with 64SSD installation takes 25 min
Hello, I have a new disk and I want to install from USB, but when I hold alt, the only option is displayed, i.e. USB, then a gray screen with an apple appears and nothing happens ;( the apple disappears after a while and then only the fan works . Does anyone know where the error could be? Thank you. M.
It works for me too, you have to wait, it takes a long time, but eventually the disk utility will start ;)
I bought an Air - new with Lion, is it possible to backup lion on a flask? Only installed is shown in applestore, but not in purchased! Can someone advise me? Thank you.
when I installed it, can a backup be made so that I can do a clean installation?.. or do I just need to install from recovery?
I have a question. Is it possible to create an installation usb or dvd in a mac that is running in virtualbox?
