Almost three months after the last update Apple has released the next version of the OS X Yosemite operating system for Mac computers. OS X 10.10.4 is all about background fixes and improvements that the user won't see at first glance. Important in OS X 10.10.4 is the removal of the problematic "discoveryd" process, which caused many users problems with network connections.

Apple traditionally recommends the latest update to all users, OS X 10.10.4:

  • Increases reliability when working in networks.
  • Increases the reliability of the Data Transfer Wizard.
  • Addresses an issue that prevented some external monitors from working properly.
  • Improves the reliability of upgrading the iPhoto and Aperture libraries for Photos.
  • Increases the reliability of syncing photos and videos to your iCloud Photo Library.
  • Addresses an issue that caused Photos to quit unexpectedly after importing some Leica DNG files.
  • Addresses an issue that could cause delays in sending emails in Mail.
  • Fixes an issue in Safari that allowed websites to use JavaScript notifications to prevent the user from exiting.

In addition to the aforementioned, OS X 10.10.4 eliminates the "discoveryd" process that was thought to be responsible for major network connection and Wi-Fi issues in OS X Yosemite. Discoveryd was a network process that replaced the original mDNSresponder in Yosemite, but it caused problems like slow wake-up from sleep, DNS name resolution failures, duplicate device names, disconnecting from Wi-Fi, excessive CPU usage, poor battery life, and more.

On Apple's forums, users complained about problems with "discoveryd" for several months, but it wasn't until OS X 10.10.4 that this network process was replaced by the original mDNSresponder. So if you had some of the mentioned problems in Yosemite, it is possible that the latest update will solve them.
