Apple introduced the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, and although they both have the same chip, they differ slightly in performance. In fact, the GPU of the A15 Bionic chip found in the iPhone 13 Pro models is more powerful than the one in the lower iPhone 13 models. Whatever model you choose from the iPhone 13 portfolio, it will be equipped with the A15 Bionic chip. Apple says that this new chip has two high-performance cores and four economical ones. However, there is a difference between "regular" and "professional" models. The Pro models have a new 5-core GPU, while the models without this epithet are only equipped with a 4-core GPU. It is also for this reason that Apple mentions the note "the fastest chip ever in a smartphone" on the higher board, while on the lower line it only notes "faster than the competition".

ProRes is to blame

About the A15 Bionic GPU chip in the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13, Apple claims that it delivers 30% better graphics performance compared to the competition (that is, not other iPhones). As for the A15 Bionic chip in the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, their GPU provides up to 50% better performance. So again compared to the most powerful competition. It is likely that the 5-core GPU is present in the Pro models due to the addition of ProPes codec support.

When announcing the news, Apple said that the A15 Bionic includes new video encoders and decoders capable of capturing and editing video in ProRes, which not only take up a lot of internal storage space (resulting in the new 1TB storage), but also demand a lot from the GPU. This is a similar issue to the M1 chip and its use in Mac computers.

This is how Apple presented the features and capabilities of the camera of the new iPhone 13 Pro:

No chip production process is perfect, and as this process continues to shrink, the complexity of production increases. Then, when you're working at the nanometer level of precision, any elements of contamination in the room also affect the final quality. So companies often focus on a specific specification, then separate out those chips that aren't of the highest quality and implement them in the lower specifications of their product - i.e. a MacBook Air instead of a MacBook Pro, an iPhone 13 instead of an iPhone 13 Pro, etc.

However, we won't have to wait long to find out the real performance of both (or all four) devices. The pre-sale of the entire iPhone 17 series starts already on Friday, September 13, and a week later, on Friday, September 24, the phones will be available for free sale. The price starts at CZK 19 for the iPhone 990 mini model and ends at CZK 13 for the iPhone 47 Pro Max model with 390TB storage.
