The Mac mini is, in my opinion, Apple's most underrated product. Everyone looks more for MacBooks, which are more universal, but less suitable for office work, the popularity of the Mac mini is also taken by the iMac. As a Mac mini M1 user, however, I cannot praise it enough, and in contrast to the company's newly introduced novelties is the fact that we are already looking for its successor.

This week, Apple presented us with new iPads and Apple TV 4K in the form of press releases. It did not reach Mac computers, and one cannot expect Apple to dedicate its own Keynote to them. If he plans to rejuvenate his portfolio for us this year, it will be in the form of press releases. And I personally hope that it will come to the Mac mini as well.

Who is Mac mini

The Mac mini is the most affordable computer in Apple's portfolio. It is a compact desktop computer that won't take up too much space on it, and at the same time, it can handle any common work with its parameters. However, Apple supplies it without peripherals, when in its box you will actually find only the power cord - the keyboard, mouse/trackpad and display you either already own or have to purchase.

The current generation of the Mac mini was already introduced in November 2022, so it will now be two years old. It is still powered by the M1 chip, although we already have more powerful variants of this chip here. Yes, there is another variant with Intel, but let's ignore it. By default, the Mac mini comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

Mac mini M2

The current M1 Mac mini was introduced together with the MacBook Air and the 13" MacBook Pro, when all of them were connected by the M1 chip. While both mentioned models have already been updated to the M2 chip this year, the Mac mini is still waiting, even though its improvement was already rumored at the beginning of this year. The upcoming new product should have an M2 chip with an 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU, which are also the specifications of the MacBook Air 2022.

It is already clear from the name of the computer that it is not meant to tear up the asphalt with its performance, so it is more like Mac Studio. That is why we cannot expect that the Mac mini will receive certain variants of the M2 chip that the Studio or MacBook Pros have. The computer would also lose the designation of the "most affordable" Mac, because its price would shoot up unnecessarily.

Mac mini M2 Pro

If, however, Apple really wanted to cater to more demanding users who are looking for a Mac mini, but the Mac Studio would be too much for them, it is possible that we could expect one more variant, in the form of the M2 Pro chip. In theory, it could be a 12-core CPU, but this will of course only be confirmed when Apple officially presents this chip. The company should also use it in the new 14" and 16" MacBook Pros.

Design

While there are some rumors about the Mac mini being redesigned, it doesn't really make much sense. The appearance of the device still works perfectly and does not get old in any way. The question is more about the color. In the case of the M1 chip, this is only silver, but everywhere across the system the Mac mini is depicted in cosmic black, i.e. the one that belongs to devices with Intel. It is true that the company could give the user a choice again.

Price

If we wait, we will wait in November. The current M1 Mac mini costs CZK 21, which would suggest that this price tag will remain. However, nothing is certain at the moment, and since prices on the European market are rising due to the strong dollar and the global situation, it is not even excluded that they will become more expensive. It can be as little as 990 CZK, or as much as 500 CZK.
