There are two things we can be sure of. The first is that Apple will introduce the next serial number of its operating system for Mac computers, so we will see macOS 13. The second is that it will do so as part of its opening keynote at WWDC22, which will take place on June 6. However, for the time being, there is rather silence on the footpath about the other news and functions.

June is the month in which Apple organizes a developer conference, which is focused on operating systems and applications. That is why it also presents new systems for its devices here, and this year will be no different. What new functions will come to our Macs, we will only know officially during the opening keynote, until then it is only information leaks, speculations and wishful thinking.

When will macOS 13 be released?

Even if Apple introduces macOS 13, the general public will have to wait a little longer for it. After the event, the developer beta will start first, then the public beta will follow. We will probably see the sharp version in October. Last year, macOS Monterey didn't arrive until October 25th, so even from that point it's possible to get a good break. Since October 25th was a Monday, this year it could also be on a Monday, so October 24th. It is quite possible, however, that Apple will release the system together with new Mac computers, which it will introduce in October, and thus the date of the release of the system to the public can practically be as early as Friday, when sales of new machines traditionally begin.

What will his name be?

Each version of macOS is indicated by its name, except for the number. The number 13 probably won't be unlucky, because we also had iOS 13 and iPhone 13, so Apple won't have a reason to skip it out of some superstition. The designation will again be based on a location or area in the US California, which has been a tradition since 2013, when macOS Mavericks arrived. Mammoth, which has been speculated for several years and Apple owns the rights to it, appears to be the most likely. This is the location of Mammooth Lakes, i.e. the center of winter sports in the east of the Sierra Nevada.

For what machines

Most of the work on adapting macOS to M1 chips was done by Apple before the first devices with Apple Silicon were released in 2020. Monterey also runs on the iMac, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air computers from 2015, the Mac mini from 2014 , the 2013 Mac Pro, and on the 12 2016-inch MacBook. There is no reason to assume that these Macs won't be supported in the next macOS, especially since the 2014 Mac mini was sold until 2018 and the Mac Pro until 2019. With with that in mind, Apple cannot remove these Macs from the list when users may have purchased these models relatively recently.

Appearance of the system

MacOS Big Sur came with significant visual changes that should correspond with the new era. It was no surprise that macOS Monterey is riding on the same wave, and the same can be expected from the successor. After all, it would be somewhat illogical to change it again. Major redesigns of the company's existing applications cannot be expected either, but this does not rule out that some additional functions will not be added to them.

New features

We do not have any information yet and we can only guess what news we will receive. The most speculation is about the application library known from iOS, which would theoretically replace Launchpad. There is also a lot of talk about Time Machine cloud backup. But it has been talked about for a long time, and Apple is still not very interested in it. This is also linked to a possible increase in iCloud storage tariffs, which could reach the 1TB level.

Then there is the need to unlock the Mac using the iPhone, which is already possible with the help of the Apple Watch. Even such Android phones can unlock Chromebooks, so the inspiration is clear. We could also look forward to editing items in the Control Center, the Health app for Mac, better debugging of the Home app, and hopefully fixes for reliability issues.
