Already last year, we were thinking about how Apple would drastically change the design with its Watch Series 7, and their more durable variant was also strongly expected last year. In the end, this did not happen, and even if the company did work on durability, it still only brought the next generation of watches based on the classic case shape. This year is no different, and information is beginning to pour in about how Apple will really please us with the durable Apple Watch.

Name

It is assumed that Apple will launch three new models of its smart watch this year. The main one should, of course, be the Apple Watch Series 8, which should already receive a more angular design in the style of the iPhones 12 and 13. The 2nd generation Apple Watch SE should follow, and the trio should be completed by a more durable model.

It used to be talked about more in connection with the Sport designation, but now most are leaning towards the "Explorer Edition" name. So we would have Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch EE, when even that designation clearly refers to the legendary Explorer series of the Swiss brand Rolex.

Material

Since it is primarily a durable model, it is necessary to replace the metals with a more durable and lighter material. The Apple Watch EE should have a more robust case so that Apple can appeal to those who need to use its watch in extreme environments or in places where it would be easy to damage the classic Apple Watch. This watch should withstand shocks, drops and abrasions.

Apple Watch Series 7 have WR50 water resistance, but now they also have IP6X dust resistance. So they are the most durable Apple Watch ever. But they just need to change the material of the case to get the real durability. Combining fine resin with carbon fiber could be the most acceptable option. This is nothing new, as Casio uses a similar material in its durable G-Shock watches. At the same time, it is an ideally balanced resistance while maintaining a low weight. The second possible version is some rubberization. There will probably not be too much experimenting with colors here, and the watch will only be available in one, probably in a dark color, which will better hide marks after more demanding handling.

Function

Although there will certainly be unique dials, functionally the watch will be based on an existing model, so it's more just a question of which one it will be. It could be the Apple Watch Series 7 thanks to their durable glass. But they may have the same design that the Series 8 will bring, so all the functions will depend on that. If there was not a curved display but a straight one, it would help the overall durability. Certainly, a thermometer would be beneficial, but this year's Apple Watch should not include it yet, as well as non-invasive blood sugar measurement.

Performance date

If we actually get to see it this year, it is certain that it will be presented together with the iPhone 14. The Apple Watch is an ideal complement to the iPhone, and it would not make sense for Apple to devote time to it elsewhere, i.e. together with iPads or Mac computers. So we should learn the shape of the new series in September. The price of the durable variant should not exceed the standard model in any way, rather it should be cheaper, because aluminum, even if recycled, is still more expensive.
