2023 is supposed to be the year of the smart home and virtual/augmented reality. We're all impatiently waiting to see what product Apple will finally introduce in the latter area, and it shouldn't be too long. And it will probably run on realityOS or xrOS.

Again, Apple has not overlooked something, although the question is to what extent the systems are subject to some future use. We know from the past that we were also waiting for homeOS some Friday, which still hasn't arrived, and it may be the same with the current pair of systems. However, it is true that since we are expecting a headset for VR/AR consumption soon, it is quite likely that this device will actually run on one of the mentioned systems.

Registered trademark

Apple is finally going to kill iTunes on Windows PCs as well. It is to be replaced by a trio of Apple Music, Apple TV and Apple Devices titles. Although the date when the applications will be available has not yet been announced, various versions of them can already be tried. And that's where new mentions of new systems come from, but we've already heard about them in the past. References to realityOS and xrOS were found in the code of the Apple Devices application, which is supposed to be used to manage the company's products, which we do on the Mac through the Finder.

Both designations are intended to be related to Apple's headset and are included simply to allow the app to transfer, back up, or restore data from the yet-to-be-announced device, but the app is already in the works. Of the two designations, of course, realityOS seems more applicable, as xrOS evokes a reference to the iPhone XR. After all, the term realityOS belongs to Apple registered under his hidden company, so that it is not blown by some other manufacturer (although even in this, considering the speculated names of the new macOS, we know that this is no guarantee).

This trademark was already applied for on December 8, 2021 for use in categories such as "peripheral devices", "software" and especially "wearable computer hardware". Apart from this, Apple also has registered the names Reality One, Reality Pro and Reality Processor. However, the use of the realityOS designation for an operating system for devices working with some kind of reality is logical after all. But if we believe again Bloomberg, so he states that xrOS should be the name of the platform for Apple's new headset.

When will we wait?

But it is still true that we are waiting for two devices - a headset and smart glasses, so one can be a system for one hardware, the other for another. But in the end, it can also be just an internal designation to determine the issue between the development teams. At the same time, Apple may still be undecided about which name to use in the final, so it still uses both before cutting one.

Recent message Mark Gurman mentions that Apple is set to announce its mixed reality headset this spring, ahead of WWDC 2023 alongside the new Macs. We could expect a solution between March and May.
