After several years of waiting, Apple finally listened to the pleas of apple lovers and on the occasion of Tuesday's keynote presented a redesigned 24″ iMac, which is also equipped with a powerful M1 chip. Apart from the aforementioned chip, this piece boasts a brand new design and is available in seven vibrant colors. Let's shine a light together on every detail we know about this product so far.

Performance

We probably don't even need to introduce the M1 chip, which also found its way into the redesigned iMac. This is the same chip that can be found in last year's MacBook Air, 13″ MacBook Pro and Mac mini. In this case too, we have a choice of two configurations that differ only in the number of GPU cores. The M1 otherwise offers an 8-core CPU with 4 performance and 4 economy cores and a 16-core NeuralEngine. We will have two options to choose from:

  • variant se 7-core GPU with 256GB of storage (there will be an extra charge for the version with 512GB and 1TB of storage)
  • variant with 8-core GPU with 256GB and 512GB storage (there will be an extra charge for the version with 1TB and 2TB storage)

Design

If you watched yesterday's Keynote, you are probably very familiar with the new design. As we already mentioned in the introduction, the iMac will be available in seven vivid colors that are pleasing to the eye. Specifically, we will have a choice of blue, green, pink, silver, yellow, orange and purple. With the arrival of the new, 24″ size, we naturally got other sizes as well. The new iMac is therefore 46,1 centimeters high, 54,7 centimeters wide and 14,7 centimeters deep. As for the weight, it depends on the configuration and the manufacturing process. Specifically, it can be 4,46 kg or 4,48 kg, i.e. a completely negligible difference.

Display, camera and sound

From the name itself, it is quite clear that the iMac will offer a 24″ display. Well, at least that's how it looks at first glance. But the truth is that this novelty has "only" a 23,5" 4,5K display with a resolution of 4480 x 2520 pixels with a sensitivity of 218 PPI. It goes without saying that support for one billion colors and a luminosity of 500 nits is provided. There is also a wide color range of P3 and TrueTone. The front-facing FaceTime HD camera can then take care of recording in HD resolution 1080p, while the image will be additionally edited via the M1 chip – just like in the case of the mentioned Macs introduced in November 2020.

As for the sound, the iMac should definitely have something to offer in this direction. This all-in-one computer boasts six speakers with woofers in an anti-resonance arrangement, thanks to which it will offer wide stereo sound with surround sound support when using the popular Dolby Atmos format. For video calls, you might like the trio of studio microphones with noise reduction.

Connecting additional monitors

We will be able to connect another external monitor with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz refresh rate to the new iMac while maintaining the original resolution on the built-in display with a billion colors. Of course, the connection will then be taken care of by the Thunderbolt 3 input, while the output of DisplayPort, USB-C, VGA, HDMI, DVI and Thunderbolt 2 will be handled through various adapters sold separately.

entry

In the case of the input, we come across other differences that depend on the configuration – specifically, whether the iMac will have an M1 chip with a 7-core or 8-core GPU. In the case of the 7-core version, the computer can handle Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse, and it will be possible to order a new Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and numeric keypad, and Magic Trackpad. For the second variant with an 8-core GPU, Apple mentions support for Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Magic Mouse, while there is still an option to order Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and numeric keypad and Magic Trackpad. In addition, the power supply takes place through a new port, to which the cable is attached magnetically. Its advantage is that an ethernet port will be available within the adapter.

Connectivity

The iMac (2021) in the basic configuration offers a pair of Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports that can take care of DisplayPort, Thunderbolt 3 with a throughput of up to 40 Gbps, USB 4 with a throughput of up to 40 Gbps, USB 3.1 Gen 2 with a throughput of up to 10 Gbps and via a separate of sold adapters include Thunderbolt 2, HDMI, DVI and VGA. However, it is necessary to mention that the version with an 8-core GPU also has another pair of ports, this time USB 3 with a throughput of up to 10 Gbps and Gigabit Ethernet. In any case, Ethernet can be added to even the cheapest model. As for the wireless interface, Wi-Fi 6 802.11a with IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 5.0 specifications will take care of it.

Price

The basic model with 256GB of storage, an M1 chip with an 8-core CPU and 7-core GPU and 8 GB of operating memory costs a pleasant 37 crowns. However, if you would also like an 990-core GPU and two USB 8 ports with gigabit ethernet, you will have to prepare 3 crowns. Later, it is possible to choose a variant with a higher, 43GB storage, which will cost 990 crowns.
