Apple has finally introduced us to the 3rd generation AirPods. These are based on the Pro version rather than the 2nd generation AirPods as they take over some of their features. Among them is adaptive equalization, which now only the basic series lacks, because with the exception of the 3rd generation and the Pro model, you can also find it in AirPods Max. What does this technology actually consist of?

For its headphones, Apple says that the adaptive equalizer automatically fine-tunes the sound according to the shape of the ear for a rich and consistent listening experience. In the case of AirPods, Max mentions of course the ear cushions. It adds that the inward-facing microphones record exactly what you hear. The headphones adjust the frequencies of the music being played accordingly to make the experience consistent and every note sounds true.

Advantages of adaptive equalization

In more technical terms, an adaptive equalizer is an equalizer that automatically adapts to the time-varying characteristics of the communication channel. It is often used with coherent modulations such as phase-shift keying, mitigating the effects of multipath and Doppler spread. Thus, the advantage of adaptive equalization is that it removes linear errors from modulated signals by dynamically creating and applying an FIR (feed-forward) compensation filter. These linear errors can then come from transmitter or receiver filters or from the presence of several different paths in the transmission path.

By default, the EQ filter has a unity impulse response that provides a flat frequency response. The pulse position of the unit is a function of filter length and is positioned to provide the most optimal efficiency for most situations. Everything wrapped together has an effect for the user in the most faithful sound quality.

A question of use

Adaptive equalization makes sense with AirPods Pro and Max, as they contribute to listening quality by their design, but with the 3rd generation AirPods, the question is whether the use of this technology is justified. The pods simply don't seal the ear well enough for you to enjoy maximum listening quality - that is, if we're talking about a busier environment. In the quiet home, for example, you can really appreciate this technology. However, we will find out how much it will be only with the first tests. 3rd generation AirPods are available at a price of CZK 4.
