The new 14" and 16" MacBook Pros offer several ways to charge them. There are not only three Thunderbolt 4 ports, but the computers are also now equipped with a MagSafe 3 connector. According to Apple, this is designed to supply more power to the system. And of course, it still attaches magnetically to reduce the risk of the device being knocked off the table if you accidentally trip over the cable.

Apple is quite tight-lipped about the specifications of its new product. Within the MacBook Pro product page, it only mentions fast charging and hassle-free plugging and unplugging. Regarding the battery and power supply, it states the following in the technical specifications (the first figure is valid for the 14" variant and the second figure is valid for the 16" variant of the MacBook Pro):

  • Up to 17 / 21 hours of movie playback in the Apple TV app
  • Up to 11 / 14 hours of wireless web browsing
  • Lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 70,0 Wh / 100 Wh
  • 67W USB-C power adapter (included with M1 Pro with 8-core CPU), 96W USB-C power adapter (included with M1 Pro with 10-core CPU or M1 Max, to be ordered with M1 Pro with 8-core CPU) / 140W USB-C power adapter
  • Support fast charging 96W / 140W USB‑C power adapter

The MagSafe 3 cable can of course also be found in the packaging of MacBooks. If you want to equip yourself with the new product separately, the cable equipped with MagSafe 3 on one side and USB-C on the other in its 2 m variant is available for CZK 1 in the Apple Online Store. Of course, only MacBook Pro (490-inch, 14) and MacBook Pro (2021-inch, 16) are listed as compatible devices. You won't learn much here either, because the original description only reads:

“This 3-meter power cable has a magnetic MagSafe XNUMX connector that guides the plug into the MacBook Pro's power port. In conjunction with a compatible USB‑C power adapter, it will be used to charge the MacBook Pro from an electrical outlet. The cable also supports fast charging. The magnetic connection is strong enough to prevent most unwanted disconnections. But if someone trips over the cable, it releases to prevent the MacBook Pro from falling. When the battery is charging, the LED on the connector lights up orange, when it is fully charged it lights up green. The cable is braided to last a long time.”

At the launch, Apple said that for the first time it has brought fast charging to the Mac, which will allow the device's battery to be charged to 50% in just 30 minutes. But as the magazine found out MacRumors, there is one minor caveat that Apple didn't actually mention. Only the 14" MacBook Pro can fast charge via USB-C/Thunderbolt 4 ports as well as MagSafe, while the 16" MacBook Pro is limited to fast charging exclusively via this new magnetic port. So it is rather interesting why Apple adds a USB-C cable to the package instead of the one with MagSafe. The difference in price is 900 CZK, but considering the price of the MacBook Pro itself, which starts at 58 CZK, it is a relatively insignificant item. We will have to wait a little longer for the first tests of charging speeds.
