Apple presented the long-awaited AirTag locators at its spring Keynote yesterday. Thanks to long-term circulating speculations, analyzes and leaks, probably none of us were surprised by their appearance or functions. But let's now summarize everything we know about this new product, what AirTag can do, and what functions it does not offer despite expectations.

What is it and how does it work?

AirTag locators are used to make it easier and faster for users to find objects to which these tags are attached. With these locators, you can attach practically anything from luggage to keys to even a wallet. AirTags work directly with the native Find app on Apple devices, making it easier to find lost or forgotten items with the help of a map. Initially, it was speculated that Apple could include an augmented reality function in the search system to find the given items even better, but unfortunately this did not happen in the end.

Great workmanship

AirTag locators are made of polished stainless steel, have a round shape, a user-replaceable battery, and have IP67 resistance against water and dust. They are equipped with a built-in speaker, thanks to which it will be possible to play sound on them through the Find application. Users will be able to assign each of the locators to a given object in the environment of this application and name it for better overview. Users can find a list of all items marked with AirTag locators in the native Find application in the Items section. AirTag locators offer a precise search function. In practice, this means that thanks to the integrated ultra-broadband technology, users will see the exact location of the marked object in their Find application along with direction and exact distance data.

Connection is simple

The pairing of the locators with the iPhone will be similar to the case of the AirPods wireless headphones – just bring the AirTag closer to the iPhone and the system will take care of everything by itself. AirTag uses secure Bluetooth connectivity, which means devices with the Find app can pick up the locators' signal and report their exact location to iCloud. Everything is completely anonymous and encrypted, and users do not have to worry about their privacy. When developing AirTags, Apple also made sure that the consumption of the battery and any mobile data was as low as possible.

Items equipped with AirTag locators can be switched to lost device mode in the Find app if needed. If someone with an NFC-enabled smartphone finds an object marked in this way, you can set it to display your contact information when the person's phone approaches the found object. The location of an object marked with an AirTag can only be monitored by the given user, and no sensitive data is stored directly on the AirTag in any case. The iPhone will offer a notification function in case a foreign locator gets between the user's AirTags, and after a certain time limit, it will start playing a sound on it. Therefore, AirTags cannot be misused to track people either.

Exact search

Since AirTags have an ultra-wideband U1 chip, it is possible for you to find them with centimeter accuracy using your Apple devices. But the truth is that the U1 chip must also be available on the iPhone itself, or on another Apple device, in order to use this function. Only iPhones 1 and newer have the U11 chip, but that certainly doesn't mean you can't use AirTags with older iPhones as well. The only difference is that with older iPhones it will not be possible to find the pendant exactly, but only approximately.
