As part of the California Streaming event, Apple presented a new generation of its watch, the Apple Watch Series 7. It has a significantly thinner design and a larger Always-On Retina display with thinner bezels. Due to this, the user interface is also optimized overall, which offers better readability and easier use. There is, for example, a full-fledged QWERTZ keyboard or the one named as QuickPath, which allows you to enter characters by swiping your finger over them. The battery remained at an all-day 18-hour endurance, but 33% faster charging was added. Let's take a look at everything you wanted to know about the Apple Watch Series 7.

Bigger display, smaller bezels

The entire user experience of the watch naturally revolves around the larger display, on which, according to Apple, everything is better and more practical. Series 7 is said to be the embodiment of the company's grandest and most daring ideas yet. Her goal was to build a larger display, but not to increase the dimensions of the watch itself. Thanks to this effort, the display frame is 40% smaller, thanks to which the screen area has increased by almost 20% compared to the previous generation Series 6. Compared to Series 3, it is 50%.

The display still has the Always-On function, so you can always read important information on it. It's also 70% brighter now. Regarding the glass itself, Apple claims that it offers the greatest resistance to cracking. At its strongest point, it is 50% thicker than the previous generation, making it stronger and more durable overall. However, the flat underside also increases strength and resistance to cracking. The touch sensor is now integrated into the OLED panel, so it forms one part with it. This allowed the company to reduce the thickness of not only the display, but also the bezel and actually the entire watch while maintaining IP6X certification. Water resistance is indicated up to 50 m. Apple specifically says about it:

“Apple Watch Series 7, Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch Series 3 are water resistant to a depth of 50 meters according to ISO 22810:2010. This means that they can be used near the surface, for example when swimming in a pool or in the sea. However, they should not be used for scuba diving, water skiing and other activities where they come into contact with fast-moving water or at greater depths."

Battery and endurance

Many would perhaps like to keep the dimensions and increase the battery. However, the Apple Watch Series 7 has the entire charging system redesigned so that the watch can maintain the previous endurance. So Apple declares that the watch charges up to 33% faster, when only 8 minutes of connecting it to the source is enough for 8 hours of sleep monitoring, and in 45 minutes you can charge up to 80% of the battery capacity. It's so obvious what Apple is promising. It has been widely criticized for sleep monitoring. But you will surely find an 8-minute space before bed to charge your watch, and then it will measure the necessary values for you throughout the night. However, it should be noted that for all the values mentioned, Apple states "using a fast-charging USB-C cable".

Materials and colors

Two cases are available, i.e. classic aluminum and steel. No word on any ceramic or titanium (though perhaps titanium will be available in select markets). We can say with certainty only the color variants of the aluminum version. These are Green, Blue, (PRODUCT)RED Red, Star White and Dark Ink. Although Apple mentions the steel versions on its website, their colors, with the exception of gold, are not shown. However, it can be assumed that the next ones will be gray and silver.

After all, the Apple Online Store doesn't show more. We do not know availability or exact prices. The message "later in the fall" can also mean December 21. Apple does not list the prices on its website, although we know the American ones, which are the same as for the Series 6. So, if we were to start from this, it can be assumed that it would be 11 CZK for the smaller one and 490 CZK for the larger one variants of the aluminum case. No one at the entire event mentioned the performance either. If the Apple Watch Series 7 were leaps and bounds ahead, Apple would certainly boast about it. Since it didn't, most likely a previous generation chip is included. However, it is also confirmed by foreign media. We don't know the dimensions, the weight, or even the resolution of the display. Apple did not even include the Series 7 in the comparison on its website. All we know is that the new generation will also support the o original sizes and that they came along with the news updated their colors.

Software

Apple Watch Series 7 will, of course, be distributed with watchOS 8. Apart from all the novelties already presented at WWDC21 in June, the new generation of Apple watches will receive three special dials that are tuned for their larger display. There is also a new Mindfulness application designed to monitor the rate of breathing during sleep, detection of a fall on a bike and many improvements in Apple Fitness+, which we may not be too interested in, since this platform is not available in the Czech Republic.
