WhatsApp has been preparing us for the launch of multi-device support for a long time, and now the platform has taken the next-to-last important step - it has launched a beta program to test its full-fledged cross-platform support. With the exception of mobile phones with iOS, it will be possible to use WhatsApp on the web and on computers without the need to connect the phone.

If you join the multi-device beta test, you'll be able to use connected companion devices without having to have your phone connected. The iPad version is still not available, and the situation with Instagram is probably repeated here. So rather than creating standalone applications, Meta prefers to just debug the web environment.

Join the beta testing of WhatsApp cross-platform support:

  • Install the latest app update.
  • Go to Settings.
  • choose Connected devices.
  • Here, the application already informs you about the new testing. Just choose it OK.
  • Now you can test cross-platform support.
  • If you choose Beta version for multiple devices, you can choose here Leave beta version.

What features you get when you sign up for the public beta program:

  • You can use WhatsApp on up to four companion devices at once, but you can only have one phone connected to your WhatsApp account.
  • You will still need to register your WhatsApp account and link new devices to your phone. You can find WhatsApp Web on the website web.whatsapp.com, where you scan the displayed QR with your iPhone.
  • If you don't use the phone for more than 14 days, your linked devices will be disconnected (this will probably go away with the sharp version).

The multi-device beta is currently available to people using the latest version of WhatsApp or the WhatsApp Business app on Android and iPhone. Although it's not entirely clear when Meta will release full support for multiple devices, there are still a lot of features that aren't available in Meta.

Currently unsupported features

  • Delete or delete chats on companion devices if your primary device is iPhone.
  • Message or call someone who is using a very old version of WhatsApp on their phone.
  • Tablet support.
  • View live location on companion devices.
  • Creating and displaying a list of broadcasts on companion devices.
  • Sending messages with preview links from the WhatsApp website.

It is also worth mentioning that everything is of course free. So this is another step towards consolidating the position of the biggest player among chat services.
