VR/AR content consumption devices are being talked about as a bright future. Unfortunately, it has been talked about for several years, and even if there are certain efforts, especially in the case of Google and Meta, we are still waiting for the main thing. It may or may not be an Apple device.

Finishing work on the system

That Apple is really planning "something" and that we should expect "it" quite soon is now evidenced by a report Bloomberg. She reports that Apple continues to recruit employees for teams working on AR and VR technology. Analyst Mark Gurman mentions that development of the first operating system the device will run on is codenamed Oak and is being closed internally. What does it mean? That the system is ready to be deployed in hardware.

This recruitment goes against the grain of limiting that for regular jobs. Apple's job listings also highlight that the company wants to bring third-party apps to its mixed reality headsets. There should also be Siri Shortcuts, some form of search, etc. By the way, Apple also moved engineers working on other projects to the "headset" team. Everything indicates that he needs to fine-tune the final details of the upcoming product.

When and for how much?

The current expectation is that Apple will announce some form of its headset for mixed reality or virtual reality as early as 2023, but at the same time it is very likely that this solution will be very expensive. The first version probably won't even target mass consumers, instead targeting "pro" users in healthcare, engineering and developers. It is estimated that the final product will attack the threshold of 3 thousand dollars, i.e. something around 70 thousand CZK without tax.

Three new models right away

Until recently, the name "realityOS" was the only clue we had about the possible name of Apple's new mixed reality headset. But at the end of August it was revealed that Apple had applied to register the trademarks "Reality One", "Reality Pro" and "Reality Processor". With all this in mind, of course, there have been many theories about how Apple will name its new products.

At the beginning of September, however, information leaked that Apple was developing three headsets codenamed N301, N602 and N421. The first headset that Apple will introduce will probably be called Apple Reality Pro. It's supposed to be a mixed reality headset and aims to be a major rival to Meta's Quest Pro. This is confirmed by the information above. A lighter and more affordable model should come with the next generation.

Own chip and ecosystem

The Reality Processor clearly indicates that the headset (and possibly other upcoming AR/VR products from Apple) will have Apple's own Silicon family of chips. Just as iPhones have A-series chips, Macs have M-series chips, and the Apple Watch has S-series chips, Apple's AR/VR devices could have R-series chips. It shows that Apple is trying to do a lot more to a product than just give it a chip iPhone. Why? We're talking about devices that are expected to display 8K content while still relying on battery power. Not only this, but also marketing plays a big role in this case, even if it was the same and just a renamed chip. So what's on offer? Of course the R1 chip.

Apple View concept

In addition, "Apple Reality" will not be just one product, but an entire ecosystem based on augmented and virtual reality. So it may seem that Apple really believes that there is a future in AR and VR, as the company has been investing heavily in this area in recent years. In combination with a watch, AirPods and also possibly a ring that is allegedly being prepared, Apple could finally show us what such a device should look like, because neither Meta nor Google are too sure.
