In promotional materials, Apple did not fail to boast that the newly introduced iPhone 11 has the best water resistance. But what does the IP68 label really mean?

First, let's talk about what the abbreviation IP even means. These are the words "Ingress Protection", officially translated into Czech as "Degree of coverage". The name IPxx expresses the resistance of the device against the ingress of unwanted particles and protection against water.

The first number indicates resistance to foreign particles, most often dust, and is expressed on a scale of 0 to 6. Six is maximum protection and guaranteeing that no particles get inside the device and damage it.

iPhone 11 For water resistance

The second number represents water resistance. Here it is expressed on a scale of 0 to 9. The most interesting are degrees 7 and 8, because they occur most often among devices. Conversely, grade 9 is rare, as it means resistance to gushing high-pressure hot water.

Smartphones usually have protection type 7 and 8. Protection 7 means immersion in water for a maximum of 30 minutes at a depth of up to 1 meter. Protection 8 is then based on the previous level, but the exact parameters are determined by the manufacturer, in our case Apple.

The best endurance in the field of smartphones, but it decreases with time

U of new iPhones 11 Pro / Pro Max endurance of up to 30 minutes at a depth of 4 meters is stated. In contrast, the iPhone 11 has to make do with "only" 2 meters for a maximum of 30 minutes.

However, there is one more difference. Both smartphones are not as water resistant as the Apple Watch Series 3 to Series 5. You can go swimming with the watch repeatedly and nothing should happen to it. On the contrary, the smartphone is not built for this load. The phone is not even built for diving and resisting high water pressure.

Even so, the iPhone 11 Pro / Pro Max models offer one of the best protections on the market. Standard water resistance is usually one to two meters. At the same time, the new iPhone 11 Pro offers exactly four.

However, it is still not absolute resistance. Water resistance is achieved both by fitting and processing individual components, and by using special coatings. And these are unfortunately subject to standard wear and tear.

Apple directly states on its website that durability may decrease over time. Also, the bad news is that the warranty does not cover cases where water gets into the device. And this can happen quite easily, for example if you have a crack in the display or elsewhere on the body.
