Apple currently has a huge boost to its design team led by Sir Jonathan Ive. He is none other than Marc Newson, currently one of the world's most influential product designers and also a long-term friend of Jony Ivo. Jony Ive and Marc Newson have a long history together. They last worked together on special products auctioned at a charity event (RED) led by Bono, lead singer of U2. For example, they prepared for the auction a unique version of a Leica camera, a red Mac Pro or an aluminum "unibody" table.

Newson has a large number of product designs to his credit across categories ranging from aircraft to furniture to jewelry and clothing. He made designs for companies such as Ford, Nike and Qantas Airways. Marc Newson is an Australian born, graduated from Sydney College of Arts and has been living in London since 1997. Like Jony Ive, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his work in design. In 2005, Time magazine ranked him among the 100 most influential people in the world.

Because of the new job, Newson will not be moving from London, he will conduct the work partly remotely, partly flying to Cupertino. "I absolutely admire and respect the incredible design work that Jony and the team at Apple have done," Newson told the site Vanity Fair. “My close friendship with Jony gives me not only a unique insight into this process, but also the opportunity to work with him and the people who are responsible for this work. I am incredibly proud to join them.” Jony Ive himself considers Newson to be one of the "most influential designers of this generation".

Over the past year, Apple has welcomed a large number of influential and successful personalities to its ranks, namely Angela Ahrendts from Burberry, Paul Deven from Yves Saint Laurent or Ben Shaffer from Nike. Newson may not be involved in the upcoming smartwatch (unless he's already been involved externally) that Apple is expected to unveil in just a few days, but it's worth noting that he himself founded watch company Ikepod.
