Ifixit.com ran into an inconvenience when disassembling the new iMacs with a Thunderbolt port. Apple has taken another step to prevent the replacement of hardware in new computer models by its own forces.

He changed the power connector of the hard disk in his own image. A 3,5-pin power connector is used for classic 4" SATA drives. But the new iMacs are equipped with hard drives with 7-pin connectors. The reason for implementing more pins is a new thermal sensor, thanks to which the speed of the disk fans can be regulated. If you connect a hard drive with four pins to a new iMac, the fans will spin at maximum speed and the iMac will not pass the hardware test (Apple Hardware Test).

This means that you have to order a new drive directly from Apple. It has a relatively small range of hard drives and relatively high prices. If you look at the specifications of iMacs on the official Apple website, you will find that specifically for the cheaper 21,5" model, there is no other option than a 500 GB hard drive. In the Czech Republic, unfortunately, customers cannot yet configure even higher models and thus have to settle for a maximum capacity of 1 TB.

Hopefully, the next revision of iMacs will bring back the common connector used for hard drives. Proprietary solutions always bring complications, which can be particularly unpleasant in the event of a hard disk crash.
