Personally, I have not been without the very handy f.lux application on a Mac for several years, which colors the computer display in warm colors, so it is much easier (less demanding on the eyes) to look at it even in poor light. Apple has now decided to build such a feature directly into macOS Sierra.

Night Shift, as Apple's night mode is called, will not be anything new. A year ago, a California company showed a night mode modeled after f.lux in iOS 9.3, which in turn was a shift in user comfort. In addition, the night mode also helps human health, because it eliminates the so-called blue light.

While to iOS Apple f.lux never he didn't let go, on the Mac, this free application has long been the undisputed ruler. But now it will be joined by a strong competitor, as Night Shift will also arrive on Mac as part of macOS Sierra 10.12.4. Apple revealed this in the first beta it released yesterday.

Night Shift can be launched from a bookmark on a Mac Today in the Notification Center, but in Settings it will also be possible to order the automatic activation of the night mode, both according to the exact time or at sunset. You can also choose the color of the display - whether you want less or more warm colors.

In general, these will be very similar functions to those offered by the f.lux application for a long time, but at least for the time being, the third-party version has a big advantage: f.lux can be deactivated for specific applications or interrupted, for example, only for the next hour. Personally, I use these functions a lot when watching movies and series, when I don't have to manually regulate anything.

However, it is possible that Apple will still develop Night Shift within the beta versions of macOS 10.12.4 before it is released to the general public.
