Apple already indicated at the beginning of this year that it would like to mix up the normal routines in schools with the iPad, when introduced tool for creating interactive textbooks. Now he introduced another app – Configurator, which wants to make handling iPads even easier for schools.

Apple Configurator appeared silently in the Mac App Store after yesterday keynote, where the new iPad was introduced.

The new application from the Cupertino workshop is available for free for computers with OS X Lion and is used for mass management of iPads, iPhones and iPod touches. Apple Configurator will allow you to manage up to 30 iOS devices at the same time, so Apple is obviously targeting schools where it would like to "smuggle" iPads as textbooks. Of course, the application can also be used by other smaller institutions, but it does not have the capacity for large organizations.

Apple Configurator is actually the successor iPhone Configuration Utility, which Apple introduced almost four years ago along with the iPhone 3G, the App Store and iOS 2.

From the comfort of your Mac, you can use Apple Configurator to:

  • Erase (restore) the device and install a certain version of iOS
  • Update iOS
  • Assign a unique name to each device
  • Back up or restore data from created backups
  • Create and use configuration profiles
  • Install apps (either public from the App Store or created for your own use)
  • License paid applications using the Volume Purchase Plan
  • Install documents (documents must be linked to one of the installed applications)
  • Organize devices into groups for easier management
  • Disable devices from syncing with other computers
  • Assign a lock screen image to a group or individuals
  • Create check-in/check-out settings that allow the user to access their data regardless of what device they get
