These days, the number of apps in the App Store has crossed the magical mark of a quarter of a million apps. This respectable number was reached after two years and 49 days since the app store first launched.

As recently as June 2010, there were 225 apps in the App Store. This noticeable increase may also be due to the great increase in popularity of Apple products, specifically the iPad and now the iPhone 000. As a result, developers are creating more applications for these devices.

In the following graph, which was created by collecting data from 148apps.biz, you can see that the categories of books with 17%, games with 14% and entertainment with 14% have the largest share. Next, the pie chart is divided into several smaller parts.

Data from 148apps.biz and AndroLib was further used by the folks at Royal Pingdom, who compared the share of paid and free apps. In the App Store, 70% of apps are paid and 30% are free. You can see detailed results below.

We will certainly soon hear the specific results and the exact number of applications in the App Store directly from the mouth of Steve Jobs or another Apple employee at the planned Media event on September 1, 2010.
