It has become almost a tradition for Tim Cook, when announcing quarterly financial results, to announce with appropriate pride how significant a share in the growth of iPhone sales are the so-called "switchers", that is, users who switched to Apple from the rival Android. The latest magazine survey PCMag delved deeper into the migration phenomenon and the result is a list of the most common reasons that lead users to abandon their original operating system.

According to a survey of 2500 US consumers, 29% changed their smartphone's operating system. Of these, 11% of users switched from iOS to Android, while the remaining 18% switched from Android to iOS. Please note that the survey focused only on Android and iOS operating systems.

If you're guessing finance as the main reason for the move, you're guessing right. Users who switched from iOS to Android said it was because of better prices. The same reason was given by those who made a turn in the opposite direction. 6% of people who switched from iOS to Android said it was because of "more apps available". 4% of users switched from Android to iOS because of apps.

The only area where Android clearly led was customer service. 6% of defectors from Apple to the Android platform said they did so for "better customer service". Better service was cited by only 3% of users who switched from Android to iOS as the reason for switching.

47% of people who switched from Android to iOS cited a better user experience as the main reason, compared to just 30%. Other reasons that led users to switch to the bitten apple were better features such as the camera, design and faster software updates. 34% of survey participants said they buy a new phone when their contract ends, while 17% cite a broken screen as the reason for buying a new device. 53% of users said they buy a new smartphone when their old one breaks.
