The native Finder application within the macOS operating system offers several different modes of displaying content, i.e. files and folders. One of them is the list view, which offers a lot of options for work and customization. Today, let's take a look together at some useful tips and tricks for working in List View in the Finder.

Sort by criteria

In list view, the native Finder on Mac offers rich sorting and sorting options. Open the desired folder in the Finder and then click the line icon on the bar at the top of the window. In the menu that appears, select the required sorting parameters. If you have a lot of items in a folder and want to see some of the older ones, head over to the Date Modified section above the list of items. Hover your mouse cursor over the relevant field until an arrow symbol appears and click to sort the entries from oldest to newest.

Resize columns

You can also play around with column widths appropriately in Finder's list view. First, aim the mouse cursor at the divider between two columns until a cursor with an arrow appears instead of the classic cursor. Then just click and drag to adjust the column width. If you want to quickly maximize the width of a given column, just double-click the dividing line with the mouse.

Adding more columns

In the native Finder on Mac, you can also quickly and easily add new criteria columns in list view. There are two ways to do this. In the Finder, open the corresponding folder, hold down the Option (Alt) key and right-click on any category in the bar above the list (see gallery). In the menu that appears, you just need to check the other desired sorting criterion (for example, Date Added, Last Opened, Notes and others). Another option is to click View in the bar at the top of your Mac screen. In the menu that appears, select View Options and check the required items in the Show Columns section.

Calculating folder sizes

If you sort items by size in the Finder list view on your Mac, you may notice that folders are missing their size. Fortunately, this is a default setting that you can easily change. In the bar at the top of your Mac screen, click View -> Display Options. At the bottom of the window that appears, check Show all sizes and click Set as default.

View folder contents

By switching to list view in the Finder on your Mac, you can quickly and easily view the contents of individual folders without having to open the folders. Just click on the folder in question and then press the right arrow key. If this step doesn't work for you, click View in the toolbar at the top of your Mac's screen and make sure Use Groups is not enabled.
