AI is coming at us from all sides. Recent advances in the field of artificial intelligence have attracted a lot of attention, both with regard to the generation of some content and, for example, in the case of deep fakes. But what to expect from Apple in this regard?

Apple is the largest information technology company in the world by revenue. So it would make sense that it would invest heavily in artificial intelligence. But his strategy is a little different than you might expect. Apple's vision is powerful handheld devices that are capable of performing their own machine learning on data collected using their own array of sensors. This is in clear contrast to the vision of a future dominated by cloud computing.

This simply means that machine learning algorithms will run directly on devices using powerful chips embedded in phones, watches or even speakers, without any processing on Apple's servers. One current example is the development of the Neural Engine. It is a custom-designed chip that is specifically designed to perform the neural network calculations required for deep learning. This enables faster processing of features such as Face ID login, in-camera features that help users take better pictures, augmented reality and battery life management.

AI will affect every Apple product

Tim Cook said during a recent call with investors that artificial intelligence will be for Apple “the main goal that will affect every product and service. It's incredible in terms of how it can enrich customers' lives.” he added. Of course, he also pointed to some of Apple's services that already have built-in AI elements, including a new accident detection feature.

In case you missed it, Apple has launched a new line of audiobooks narrated by AI-generated voices under its Books title. The collection includes dozens of titles and it is often quite difficult to recognize that the text is not being read by a real person. These digital voices are natural and "human-narrator-based," but some critics say they're not what customers really want because they're no substitute for the impassioned performances that human readers can actually deliver to listeners far better.

The future starts right now

Until recently, many AI tools seemed like science fiction, until a few products for everyday users hit the market. Of course, we come across the Lensa AI and DALL-E 2 platforms, along with the ChatGPT chatbot. The last two mentioned titles are products of the company OpenAI, in which another large technology giant - Microsoft - owns a significant share. Google also has its own version of AI, which it calls LaMDA, although it is not publicly available. We don't have a tool from Apple yet, but maybe we will soon.

The company is increasing the number of employees for its own AI department. It currently has more than 100 machine learning and artificial intelligence jobs open, and is also planning an internal AI summit to be held at Apple Park. We can't help but wonder how Apple could integrate artificial intelligence more closely into its devices - we would love a simple text chat with Siri. When we can no longer speak to her by voice, i.e. in Czech, she should be able to understand the text, in any language. The second thing would be about photo editing. Apple still does not offer advanced retouching options in its Photos.
