Facebook's Rooms can now be used by Czech users, Twitter recognizes which applications you use, the new #Homescreen application creates an interactive print of your iPhone's screen for convenient sharing, another new feature allows you to unlock your Mac using Touch ID, and Dropbox now allows you to edit documents using Office. That and much more in the next issue of App Week.

News from the world of applications

RSS reader Unread has changed owners and switched to a freemium model (November 25)

In September of this year, the RSS reader for iPad called Unread changed hands. Supertop, the developer of the Castro podcast app, bought it from developer Jared Sinclair. Unread is a classic reader that collects articles from many RSS services, including Feed Wrangler, Feedbin, Newsblur, etc. Unread was re-released after the acquisition, this time free to download, but with in-app payments to unlock full functionality.

The free version allows you to read three articles a day using one skin. The full version has seven of them, and the number of articles to read is of course unlimited in the full version. Unlocking costs 3,99 euros, but the more generous can pay 4,99 euros or 11,99 euros (all these prices unlock the same features).

Facebook Rooms is coming to the Czech Republic with an update, it will also offer new functions (November 26)

We have already reported on Facebook's new mobile application, the Rooms discussion forums a month ago, but then it was not available to Czech users. That changes with the latest update, which also brings a few new features.

Rooms 1.1.0 can send push notifications about activities in the "room" you are a part of; choose from fifty different sounds that sound when you click the "like" button; track your activity in "rooms" (amount of time spent, number of messages, comments and "likes" for the last week). The update also includes bug fixes and app performance improvements.

Twitter will have an overview of the user's installed applications (November 26)

Twitter's latest mobile feature launch is somewhat controversial. It will allow him to monitor which applications the given user has installed on his device. This is said to be the only information that "app graph" will obtain and will not have access to the data processed by installed applications. The function is intended to better personalize the user experience, which in practice means a better selection of recommended people to watch, advertised applications to download, etc.

Those who find this to be too much of an invasion of privacy can block this feature. This will happen automatically if the user has “Tracking Restrictions” activated on their iOS device, which can be found in Settings > Privacy > Ads. Those who do not have "Restriction of Followers" turned on will receive a notification informing them of this new Twitter feature.

App Graph can later be turned off directly in the Twitter app. In the "Me" tab, just click on the gear icon, open Settings, choose an account and change the behavior of this new function in the Privacy section.

New applications

#Homescreen will create an interactive fingerprint of your home screen

iPhone users on Twitter love to regularly share their home screens. They show others what apps they use and at the same time look for inspiration on which apps they should try themselves.

A new tool called #Homescreen from the developers at Betaworks makes desktop sharing much more advanced and interesting. This free tool will create an interactive image from your screenshot and generate a link with which you can instantly share this image on, for example, Twitter.

If you then open the link to the image published on the service's website, you can swipe over the icons of the individual applications and you will immediately see a description of the respective applications and interesting statistics about how popular the given application is. It's also nice that you can scroll through individual folders.

Application recognition does not always work completely flawlessly (especially for local or less used titles), but the application is overall very successful and definitely interesting for many users.

For a visual demonstration of how the application works you can view an interactive screenshot of my own screen.

#Homescreen download free in the App Store.

Screeny cleans your iPhone of screenshots

Screeny is a new application that allows you to easily delete all screenshots from your photo gallery. The app will automatically recognize the screenshots and let you manually confirm to mark them for deletion. However, it should be noted that the application only runs on the latest iOS 8.1 system.

When you launch the app, you're greeted with a fairly simple interface with a single button to start a search. After the phone scan process is complete, Screeny will tell you approximately how much space your screenshots take up, and you can then view their full count.

Screenshots can then be selected manually, all at once or only some, according to the criteria you specify. After pressing the icon to delete the selected pictures, you will then see the information about how much space on the phone you have gained by deleting them.

Civilization: Beyond Earth for Mac is now available for download

A new sequel to the popular strategy game Civilization was released in a Windows version a month ago, and Mac and Linux versions were also announced at the same time. These went live this Wednesday, featuring the same content as the PC version and also featuring a cross-platform multiplayer mode.

Civilization: Beyond Earth is very close to the previous games in the series in terms of gameplay. The biggest news is leaving planet Earth. "As part of an expedition to find a home beyond Earth, you will write the next chapter for humanity as you lead your people to uncharted territories and create a new civilization in space."

Before departure, the player must assemble a team and find a sponsor, which will affect the conditions of the expedition. On the planet, he will be able to explore its mythology through additional missions, send military satellites into orbit, and the like. The developers offer to discover a new planet and transform it according to the player's will, explore the inhabitants and their technologies, build invincible armies and so on.

Civilization: Beyond Earth is available in Mac App Store for €32,99 (limited time offer), on Steam for 41,99 € (promotional price, offer ends on December 2) and for the same price also on GameAgent website.

Dropshare allows you to share via servers of your choice

Although many different applications enable file sharing via the cloud, Dropshare is certainly worth a look. The sharing process itself does not make Dropshare much different from other applications. But it offers many different clouds that you can use for sharing. The most interesting feature of Dropshare is hidden in Settings under the “Connections” tab. There, the user can choose whether to share files via the Amazon S3 cloud, Rackspace Cloud Files or even using their own server via SCP.

Dropshare can automatically upload screenshots and the contents of the clipboard to the cloud, while you can easily upload other files by simply dragging them to the application icon in the upper system bar. A screen recording function is also available.

The Dropshare app for Mac is available at manufacturer's website for 10 dollars and 99 cents. For a price of €4,49, it is also possible to purchase mobile iOS version.

FingerKey will allow you to unlock your Mac using Touch ID

An interesting novelty is the FingerKey application, which allows the user to unlock the Mac using the Touch ID sensor on the iPhone 5s, 6 or 6 Plus. Thus, the user will not always have to delay entering a long password in order to start working on his computer.

The FingerKey app includes the ability to remotely unlock multiple computers, 256-bit AES encryption, and a handy Notification Center widget for quick access to the app. In addition, the developers plan to soon add the ability to unlock computers with Windows and Linux operating systems in the same way.

Important update

Dropbox this week launched the ability to edit documents using Microsoft Office

As previously promised, Dropbox has indeed activated this Tuesday the ability to open and edit Dropbox documents using MS Office tools and to take advantage of automatic saving and synchronization. Dropbox, which did not allow editing documents on mobile devices, thus became a significantly more attractive and practical application.

For documents compatible with MS Office, the Dropbox application now displays an Edit button, which automatically opens the document in the appropriate application (Word, Excel or PowerPoint) and prepares it for editing. If you then leave the document in the Office application, the changes are immediately reflected in the document in Dropbox.

In addition, the collaboration between Dropbox and Microsoft also manifests itself in the opposite approach. So if you use Office applications, you can easily open files stored in Dropbox. Again, there is also a useful function of automatic saving of changes.

Dropbox and all three applications from the Office family are free to download in the App Store. However, Dropbox Business users will need an Office 365 subscription to edit documents on mobile devices.

The game Redbull Racers has changed into a winter outfit, you can now race on snow and ice

The racing game Red Bull Racers has received an interesting update that responds to the current time of year. It brings new levels, vehicles and 36 new challenges in which you will have to race on slippery surfaces covered with snow and ice.

Among the new vehicles adapted for driving on snow and ice, we can find the beastly KTM X-Box Winter Concept and the moderate Peugeot 2008 DRK. The player can also race on a snowmobile.

Red Bull Racers in version 1.3 you can free download from the App Store.
