News from the world of applications

1Password is now effectively usable for team collaboration and accessible from the web (3/11)

1Password for Teams, a version of the keychain for organized groups of people, whether at work or at home, went into public trial on Tuesday. While so far 1Password has not offered more than simple shared keychains in this regard, the "for Teams" version is quite comprehensive in terms of how to share passwords and allow access to them. In addition, the application also offers clear information about who can work with which login data, etc.

For example, it is possible to temporarily allow access to a group keychain for visitors who can use the password autofill feature, but can never view the passwords themselves. Allowing access to the new section of the keychain is announced by a system notification. Synchronizing new passwords is fast and removing access to accounts is also very simple.

1Password for Teams also includes a new web interface, which appears for the first time for this service. For now, it doesn't allow you to create and edit passwords, but that should change over time. However, payment for the service is already connected to the web interface. 1Password for Teams will work on a subscription basis. This is not yet precisely determined, it will be decided according to feedback during the test program.

Microsoft is looking for people to test Cortana for iOS (November 4)

“We want help from Windows Insiders to make sure [Cortana] is a great personal assistant on iOS. We're looking for a limited number of people to use the early version of the app.” These are Microsoft's words referring to the Cortana app for iOS. It has been tested internally for the past six months, but it still needs to be beta tested with real users before being released to the public. Those interested can fill out this questionnaire, thereby placing it on the list of potentially selected. From the beginning, however, only people from the US or China can be among them.

Cortana for iOS should be similar in appearance and capabilities to the Windows and Android versions. The trial version can create reminders, create calendar events or send emails. The function of activating the assistant with the phrase "Hey Cortana" will not be supported yet.

Facebook has a new post format for sharing songs from streaming services (5/11)

Along with the new version of the iOS app, Facebook has given its users a new post format called "The Music Stories". This is used to share music directly from streaming services. Friends of that user will see it in their News Feed as an album art with a play button and a link to that streaming service. You can only listen to a thirty-third sample directly from Facebook, but with Spotify, for example, a song discovered in this way can be added to your own library with a single press.

Currently, it is only possible to share songs from Spotify and Apple Music in this way, but Facebook promises that in the future the support will be extended to other services of a similar nature. WITHsharing via the new post format is done on both Apple Music and Spotify by copying the track link into the status text field.

New applications

Tomb Raider: Anniversary has finally arrived on Mac

Tomb Raider: Anniversary was released in 2007 as a remake of the very first Lara Croft game. Now Feral Interactive has made it available for Mac owners to download as well. In it, players will go on a classic adventure journey through many exotic locations full of action, puzzles and intricate storylines.

Na company website is a game available for €8,99 and should soon appear in the Mac App Store as well.

The Fallout Pip-Boy iOS app heralds the imminent arrival of Fallout 4

The new Fallout Pip-Boy app itself isn't very usable. It is primarily used to display information and statistics related to the player's character in Fallout 4, which will be released on November 10. Unfortunately, Mac owners won't see this anytime soon.

The Fallout Pip-Boy will display the contents of the inventory, the map, play the radio and allow you to pass the time with holotape games without having to pause the "big" game. Apart from the demo mode, these are the only things the application can be used for for a few more days.

Fallout Pip-Boy is on the App Store available for free.

Important update

Google Keep has received significant improvements

The simple note-taking application Keep from Google has come with a rather large update that brings several interesting features. The application, which has only been in the App Store for a few weeks, has thus become even more useful and versatile.

The first new feature is a handy Notification Center widget, which makes it possible to quickly get to creating a new task from virtually anywhere, without having to return to the home screen. An action extension has also been added, which you will appreciate, for example, when you want to quickly save the content of a website, etc. Another perfect new feature is the ability to directly copy notes to Google Docs.

Flickr gets 3D Touch and Spotlight support

The official Flickr iOS app got 3D Touch support this week. Thanks to this, you can upload photos, view an overview of posts or check notifications directly from the home screen. Flickr can now also search through the system Spotlight, through which you can quickly find the desired item among albums, groups or recently uploaded photos.

3D Touch also works great inside the application, where you can scroll through photo previews with the press of your finger and press harder to bring up a larger preview. Also new is that links to Flickr open directly in the application. Thus, the user does not have to waste time with lengthy redirection through Safari.

Tweetbot 4.1 comes with a native Apple Watch app

Developers from the Tapbots studio have released the first major update to Tweetbot 4, which arrived in the App Store in October. That's when Tweetbot brought the long-awaited iPad optimization and iOS 9 news. The 4.1 update now also comes with a fully native Apple Watch app that brings Twitter to your wrist.

Tweetbot on the Apple Watch works similarly to rival Twitterrific. You can't access your tweet timeline or even direct messages on your wrist. But there is an overall overview of activity, where you can find all mentions (@mentions), your tweeted tweets marked with a star, and information about new followers. When you go to these items, you can reply, star, retweet and follow the user back.

Tapping on another user's avatar will then redirect you to the users profile, where the application provides you with the option to interact directly with the user. Of course, Tweetbot for Apple Watch also offers the option to publish a tweet using voice control.
