Dropbox is learning to collaborate deeply with iOS, Google Photos with artificial intelligence, Facebook's WorkPlace with teams, and Periscope Producer with professionals. There is no need to learn how to deal with the 41st Application Week of 2016 - just read the interesting information.

News from the world of applications

Facebook introduced a competitor to Slack, Workplace (10/10)

Workplace is, like the popular Slack, a web and mobile application for team communication and collaboration. Its target group is teams of several individuals as well as large corporations with thousands of employees.

In addition to the classic chat, Workplace offers its own profiles and an independent channel of selected posts ("News Feed") on Facebook itself. Chat groups can contain members of different organizations, and in addition to text, the application can also communicate via audio and video calls, individually or in groups.

A basic Workplace subscription for organizations of up to 1,000 people costs $3 a month. Organizations with over ten thousand people have the cheapest subscriptions, where an individual pays a dollar a month. Nonprofits and schools can use Workplace for free.

Pericsope Producer wants to impress professionals (13.)

Periscope is quite popular as a tool for live video broadcasting and watching it, but so far only among "amateurs". It allows broadcasting only from mobile devices. This is to be changed by "Periscope Producer", which will make broadcasting on Periscope/Twitter available even to users with professional equipment. So far, Twitter has worked with the likes of Disney, Louis Vuitton and Sky News, with many more to come.

Competing tools from Facebook, YouTube and Twitch were made available to professionals some time ago, so Twitter seems to have a difficult task ahead of it. However, comparing the step with the competition is definitely a good step.

Evernote Admits Software Bug Caused Data Loss for Some Mac Users (13/10)

Last week, Evernote sent out an email to some of its customers that read:

“We've discovered a bug in some versions of Evernote for Mac that can cause images and other attachments to be deleted from notes under certain conditions. According to our information, you belong to a small group of people who have experienced this error. […]

This error may appear in Evernote for Mac in versions released in September and less frequently in versions from June and later. In these versions, some actions, such as quickly scrolling through a large number of notes, may cause the image or other attachments to be deleted from the note without warning. The text in the notes is not affected by this error.'

For those who received this email, Evernote recommends updating the app on their Mac as soon as possible. The company has not been able to recover all deleted attachments automatically, but they may be available through the premium Note History service. So everyone affected by the bug will get a free one-year subscription to Evernote Premium.

The bug should not be present in Evernote for Mac versions 6.9.1 and later.

Sony plans to release five iOS games by March 2018 (14/10)

The majority of Sony's revenue currently comes from the PlayStation 4 console. But in Japan, more than half of gaming revenue comes from mobile platforms. Not wanting to be shortchanged, Sony has decided to enter this lucrative market through its subsidiary ForwardWorks, which was established in the first half of this year.

During the year ending in March 2018, Sony plans to release five new mobile games first in Japan, then in other Asian markets and then elsewhere. No more specific information about their names or properties has been released yet.

Important update

Dropbox comes with iMessage support and a host of other improvements

The popular Dropbox app is starting to adapt to iOS 10, and the new update offers many interesting features. Among the most important is probably the integration of the iMessage service, where users can share files directly in this interface. There is also a new widget that allows access to files and their creation from the widget on the lock screen.

There is also the possibility of signing documents in PDF format directly within the application, support for notifications in case someone is viewing or editing the given file, and iPad owners can look forward to picture-in-picture mode when playing videos stored in Dropbox. It was also announced that a full-fledged Split View mode will finally arrive in the near future, which would allow the application to be used on newer iPads similar to the one shown in the image above.

Google Photos brings better organization of memories and other functions

The Google Photos application, which has undergone a rather large update, now benefits from artificial intelligence-based functions. This is proven, for example, by better organization of the photos taken and subsequent structuring into certain memories. This also includes situations where the application automatically recognizes similar images (for example, a partner or a child) and creates a special section from them.

Another element is the detection of images that are taken upside down. The artificial intelligence system recognizes that the given photo should be turned to the right side and offers the user the option to flip it. Also worth mentioning is the support for creating moving GIF images from photos that include a certain activity. The feature appears similar to Apple's Live Photos, but with the difference that GIF is a standard format that's generally more convenient to share.
