News from the world of applications

Microsoft Office 2016 apps have issues on OS X El Capitan (5/10)

It was made available to the public last week a new version of OS X called El Capitan. Since then, users of Microsoft Office 2016 applications, which include Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, have been facing issues. These are usually manifested by applications crashing and, in the most extreme cases, by the inability to launch the application at all. Office 2011 users also notice the instability of Outlook. All this despite the fact that similar problems have appeared since the first trial versions of OS X El Capitan.

In response to these problems, a Microsoft spokesperson said that they are working intensively with Apple on a fix. So for now, it can only recommend installing all package updates.

Lightroom is now completely free on iPhone and iPad (October 8)

The great news, which has been somewhat lost among all the Adobe news, is that Ligtroom is now completely free for iPhone and iPad. Until now, it was an application that could be downloaded for free from the App Store, but its longer use required either the purchase of the desktop version of this software or a subscription to the Creative Cloud service. That's over and Adobe offers Lightroom for free on iPhone and iPad as part of a new policy aimed at promoting Creative Cloud services. The management of the company thus hopes that, through success on mobile devices, it will strengthen its position on the desktop as well, where users will naturally have to pay for the software.

Overcast is now completely free, can stream and supports 3D Touch (9/10)

The great Overcast application for listening to podcasts received a major update and, above all, significant changes to the business model. This is an application by the well-known developer Marc Arment, who, in addition to creating the Instapaper application, also made himself known by releasing and then downloading an ad blocker called Peace.

Overcast released version 2.0 this week, and perhaps the biggest change is that premium features that previously required an additional purchase are now completely free. "I'd rather you use Overcast for free than not use it at all. And I want everyone to use that good version of Overcast,Arment explained his decision in a blog post. According to Arment, only about a fifth of users paid for add-on functions such as the ability to smartly adjust the playback speed, the voice enhancement function, or the ability to download podcasts via the mobile network.

So Arment resented the freemium model and provides the application completely free of charge. However, every user has the option to support the development of the application by paying one dollar a month. If 5 percent of the app's existing users do so, Marco Arment says Overcast will make the same amount of money it has been making so far. In the near future, these patrons of the application will not be favored in any way, and their dollar subscription will therefore really only be an expression of support for the developer. But it is possible that in the future, payers will get exclusive access to new features.

As for the functional innovations in Overcast 2.0, 3D Touch support has been added and one more pleasant innovation. It is now possible to stream podcast episodes, i.e. play them directly from the Internet, and it is no longer necessary to download the entire podcast to the device first.

Password manager LastPass was bought by LogMeIn (October 9)

LogMeIn, the company behind the remote computer access tool of the same name, has announced that it has bought popular password manager LastPass for $125 million. The final agreement between the two companies is to be concluded in the coming weeks. For a company that primarily focuses on secure access to remote devices and accounts, this is a relatively logical and tactical purchase.

In the past, LogMeIn bought another similar application, Meldium, which deals with team password management, and now wants to combine both services into one application. Both applications will continue to be supported for some time, but when LogMeIn completes the merger of features from LastPass and Meldium, only the new resulting application will continue to be available.

Photoshop Fix and Adobe Capture CC are coming

Photoshop Fix was briefly introduced already at the launch of the iPad Pro. It was already clear from it (and from the name of the application itself) that this is an application for quick but effective editing and correction of photos. They can be performed using basic tools for brightening or darkening the image, adjusting contrast and colors, and adjusting focus. However, more complex tools can also be used, such as changing the facial expression of subjects or correcting imperfections by overlapping them according to the surroundings.

Adobe Capture CC is capable of generating color palettes, brushes, filters and vector objects from photos. These can then be used in any Adobe application that can access Creative Cloud. Creative Cloud is available in a free version with 2 GB of space. 20 GB costs $1,99 per month.

Adobe Photoshop Fix i Capture CC are available for free in the App Store.

Important update

Facebook Messenger gets iOS 9 and watchOS 2 capabilities

Messenger is another application that is added to the list of those that support full-fledged multitasking on modern iPads in the form of a split display and the Slide Over side pull-out bar. In addition, his contacts and conversations will be newly displayed in the proactive Spotlight (to the left of the main iOS screen).

Messenger for watchOS 2 was first shown at the launch of the new iPhones and iPads on September 9, but the native application for Apple Watch became available to users only now. Messenger for Apple Watch can display and respond to conversations with words and stickers.

The Google app for iOS has three new features

The Google app for iOS serves as a sort of signpost to the company's services for owners of Apple devices. Its basis is search, from which other services are derived.

In the latest update of the application, the possibility to directly rate and add photos of locations and display a GIF image animation directly in the search is added. When searching for addresses, Google will also immediately display the relevant map in the results.

Google has significantly changed the user experience of the YouTube app

The YouTube application underwent a significant user interface change last time after the launch of iOS 7, when it adapted to its more modern look. Now, like other Google apps for iOS, it is moving closer to the Material Design that was introduced with the latest version of Android. This primarily means changing the way you access video recommendations, subscriptions, and your own profile. While until now switching between them was available from the scrolling menu on the left side of the display, with the new app you just need to swipe left or right. In addition, the ability to browse YouTube while minimizing the video remains present, and the ability to use true multitasking on newer iPads with iOS 9 is absent.

Fantastical comes with a native app for Apple Watch and support for 3D Touch and multitasking

The popular Fantastical calendar has also been updated and the news is really nice. Owners of the latest iPhone 6s can use 3D Touch when interacting with the application, iPad owners will be pleased with the new multitasking, and even those who have an Apple Watch on their wrist will benefit. New complications have arrived on Apple watches, the ability to quickly switch to a specific date, and what's more, Fantastical now runs natively on the Apple Watch, which is reflected in the acceleration of the application.

If you do not yet own Fantastical, which stands out above all for its simplicity, perfect design and the ability to enter events in natural language, you can of course find it in the App Store. The iPhone version will be released on 4,99 € and the iPad version on 9,99 €. Mac owners can also visit the store for Fantastical. However, the desktop version of the application is not very friendly 39,99 €.

Tweetbot for Mac has matched its iOS counterpart

Tweetbot for Mac received an update this week that brings it functionally on par with the new Tweetbot 4 for iOS. So, without a long delay, the new Acivity tab also arrived on the Mac, where the user can track relatively detailed information about his activity on the social network Twitter.

A slight change is that quoted tweets are now displayed in the Mentions tab, which should result in a clearer view of your interactions within Twitter. In Tweetbot on Mac, you can now also play videos from Twitter, Instagram and Vine, and viewing images has also been improved. Using the pinch to zoom gesture, it is now possible to adjust the size of the entire image preview window. It is also worth noting that you can now easily upload videos directly to Twitter using Tweetbot. Naturally, the update also fixed a number of known bugs.
