The creator of Instapaper is preparing an application for podcasts (September 22)

Marco Arment, the developer behind the popular apps Instapaper and The Magazine, which he later sold, is preparing a new venture. At the conference, XOXO announced that it is working on Overcast, an app for managing and listening to podcasts. According to him, podcasts are great, but Apple isn't excelling with its app and third-party efforts aren't much better, so he decided to take matters into his own hands. Marco Arment has the application half finished and should be finished by the end of the year. Those interested in further information can apply at the address Overcast.fm to the newsletter.

The iMessage Chat application briefly appeared in the Play Store (September 24)

iMessage is a communication protocol for sending messages exclusively on the iOS platform, however, one Chinese programmer tried to bring the service to Android as well. Among other things, iMessage Chat tried to mimic the look of iOS 6 to evoke Apple's service even more. However, its functionality was quite limited and only worked between two Android devices. To trick Apple's servers, the app masqueraded as a Mac mini. However, there have been some controversial issues surrounding iMessage for Android. For example, Saurik, the author of Cydia, discovered that the service first sent data to the author's Chinese server before sending it to Apple's servers. The controversy was short-lived, however, as Google removed the app from the Play Store for violating store rules.

New applications

FIFA 14 Free for iOS

A new version of FIFA soccer simulator appeared in the App Store this week. The latest installment of the football series is free for the first time and, to the disappointment of many, it switches to the infamous freemium model, albeit a better one. Game modes such as Ultimate team, penalties and online play are free. You only pay one time for Kick off, Manager mode and Tournament, namely €4,49. Along with new graphics, a new player interface comes new controls that allow you to control the entire game with gestures. But for those who liked the traditional joystick, the control can be easily switched in the settings. FIFA 14 features real players, real leagues and 34 authentic stadiums to choose from. If you want to hear the voices of the commentators, you have to download them yourself in the game settings.

Simplenote for Mac

The developer studio Simplematic, which was previously bought by Automattic, the company behind WordPress, completely changed their business model and came with an update of the existing Simplenote applications as well as new applications for other platforms. This includes Android and Mac versions. The OS X app looks a lot like the Android version and works similarly. It is divided into two columns, the left for navigation and the right for content. With its cross-platform nature, which also includes Simplenote for the web, it attacks Evernote and targets users who are looking for a reliable ecosystem, but prefer simplicity and are content with a plaintext editor.

In addition to cross-platform synchronization, Simplenote also offers the ability to return to previous versions of individual notes and collaborate with multiple people on notes. All apps are now free, however, Automattic is planning new premium accounts (previous premium features have been suspended) that will bring more advanced features to users. For everyone else, Simplenote will remain free.

Important update

VLC 2.1 and 4K video

One of the most popular video players across desktop operating systems has been updated to version 2.1, which will bring 4K video support, meaning it can play movies with four times the resolution of Blu-ray. VLC also newly supports OpenGL ES, adds several new codecs, and fixes about 1000 bugs. You can download VLC for free here.

Instagram has received an update for iOS 7

The photo social network Instagram has also received a redesign in the style of iOS 7. However, the changes were half-baked. The appearance is flatter, but the classic buttons, for example, have remained. Photos now fill the entire vertical space, and rather strange are the new circular avatars, which definitely do not fit Instagram. Either way, you can find the Instagram update in the App Store free.

Pixelmator 2.21

The Pixelmator image editing app for Mac has received a new version 2.2.1, a number of new improvements have been added to increase the overall speed of the app.

Pixelmator can open and save documents up to twice as fast, saving to iCloud is also faster, and better Quick Look support allows users to preview documents without opening them. Pixelmator can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for 12,99 €.

Skype with window sharing

An earlier version of Skype for Mac brought the ability to share the entire computer screen with the other party. Although a great feature, it is not always convenient for the user to share the content of the entire screen. That's why the 6.9 update comes with the ability to limit sharing to a window only. You can download Skype for free here.
