News from the world of applications

Facebook is testing its own assistant "M" (26 August)

The speculation was confirmed. Facebook admitted that several hundred people in San Francisco are already testing the intelligent assistant, officially named M. It should work in the Messenger application, where it will carry out various orders and answer questions.

According to the information, the given questions should not only be answered by a computer, but also by a certain circle of people. In the end, it looks like M will be another person or contact that you can talk to normally. The smart assistant should also not have access to your personal data and will only do what you tell it to do via Messenger.

More detailed information, including when we will see M, is not yet known. On the other hand, it can be assumed that we won't get Czech just like Siri or Cortana.

Adobe is preparing a new Photoshop application for iOS (August 26)

Computer graphics software firm Adobe has announced that it will release a new Photoshop for iOS in October. This should be focused primarily on retouching functions in the field of photography.

[youtube id=”DLhftwa2-y4″ width=”620″ height=”350″]

A few months ago, Adobe removed the very popular Photoshop Touch application from the App Store. Now it is about to be replaced by a much more intuitive and clear application. The new Photoshop should also include new features and options. Likewise, in many cases various photographic terms will be simplified. Of course, the application will support standard editing options, such as cropping, brightness, working with colors or vignetting, in addition to retouching functions. There will also be a face recognition function.

However, the American company is still not doing very well in the field of mobile phones and tablets. Their goal is that users, for example, on an iPad or iPhone, can use the same functions as on a Mac or computer, even if the desktop, environment and functions are preserved.

It's also a fact that users don't have that many choices when it comes to retouching. The native Photos application on iOS does not have retouching functions, unlike its computer platform.

The new Photoshop should be built on a freemium model and will use a Creative Cloud subscription. Conversely, Photoshop Touch cost 10 € and did not require any additional in-app purchases.

The new Photoshop will be available for both iPhone and iPad. An Android version should come in time.

Rovio plans to lay off employees. Angry Birds don't drag that much anymore (26.)

The famous Scandinavian game studio Rovio, which is behind the popular Angry Birds series, has found itself in trouble. According to the company's management, a decrease in profit is expected this year. For that reason, Rovio announced that it intends to lay off more than one-third of its employees, or about 260 people.

The layoffs will reportedly affect the company as a whole, except for people working in the US and Canada on the movie, which is inspired by the Angry Birds game series. The company further stated that it sees its future mainly in games, media and consumer goods. On the contrary, it intends to get rid of the division that opened themed playgrounds in Singapore and China.

Important update

Pocket has launched a recommendation feature in earnest

Pocket is a popular application for storing links, videos and images and allowing them to be consumed later without the need for an Internet connection. In addition, thanks to the synchronization option, saved items are available on all the user's devices and even on the web. But with the latest update, Pocket has turned into an application that is no longer just a classic reader.

As Pocket's developers aim to get people to use the app as much as possible, the amount of content available is now expanded with recommendations sent based on what the user has previously saved, read and shared. So the recommendations are not just a collage of the most read articles on the web, but are chosen to match your interests. As with music services, for example, it is also possible to gradually adjust the recommendations by simply rejecting unsuitable items.

Recommendations are only available in English for now, but the developers are said to be working to make the feature available to as many users as possible in their native language as soon as possible.

Workflow now offers a widget, synchronization between devices and new actions

The popular Workflow application for building and running automated actions has come with a major update that brings two key novelties – a widget to the Notification Center and the ability to synchronize actions between devices.

The app, which lets you compose actions like composing a GIF from a series of photos, uploading the last photo to Dropbox, calculating tips, getting song lyrics, scanning a QR code and much more, now lets you run actions even faster. You can activate them directly from the widget on the locked screen.

In addition, you will no longer have to compile actions on each device separately. Workflow now offers the possibility of synchronization through its own synchronization service Workflow Sync. The actions you created will always be available to you on all your devices.

It is also worth noting that the developers have added a number of new actions as part of the update, including the ability to share via the popular Transmit and a whole range of actions associated with the Health system application. A number of existing events have also been improved. Edited images are now published in higher quality, PDF creation is more reliable, videos can be tweeted and so on.

Workflow is available for download in the App Store for € 4,99.
