The current week of apps features news on the Walking Dead-themed game and the software pages of FiftyThree's Pencil stylus. Modern Combat 5 and an interesting photo editing app have arrived in the App Store, along with updates for Gmail and OneDrive. However, that is not all, see below.

News from the world of applications

The trailer for the new mobile game The Walking Dead: No Man's Land has been released (22/7)

Actually, it's more of a teaser, because we don't see anything from the game itself. All we get is an atmospheric, static depiction of (presumably) the game's main characters hiding from "walkers" in a dilapidated warehouse. The close cooperation of Telltale developers with AMC, the television station where the game's original, the popular "zombie-series" The Walking Dead (Living Dead) is broadcast, is most noticeable in the post-apocalyptic-horror atmosphere.

In addition to mentioning the collaboration, the press release also vaguely describes the nature of the game, which is said to copy themes from the series. Players will have to make tough decisions and choose strategies to survive in a post-apocalyptic world full of the undead. The game system is said to have been developed specifically for smartphones and tablets.

The game should appear in app stores early next year.

Foursquare is set to completely overhaul its main app (23/7)

Jablíčkář already informed about adjustments in the additional Foursquare application for reporting visited places (check-ins).

Now, this information is complemented by the announcement of a redesign of the main mobile application for access to Foursquare, the appearance of which will be adapted to the individual way of use of each individual user.

“No two people see the world exactly the same, so no two people will have the same experience with the app. Once you share some information about yourself with Foursquare – by defining your tastes, following experts, or just hanging out for a few days – the app will be 100% yours.”

The new Foursquare app will also get a new icon and include a "check-in" button if the user also has Swarm installed.

New applications

Modern Combat 5

Modern Combat 5 is another in a series of copies of games from the Call of Duty series from Gameloft developers. However, this is one of the few cases where the "copy" is perhaps better than the "original". Modern Combat 5 was mainly inspired by the basic game system and theme, but the execution seems to be at a higher level. The singleplayer is a story containing six chapters, which are further divided into missions. The latter is linked to multiplayer, so both modes not only share unlocked weapons, but access to higher levels is also dependent on playing both. Playing multiplayer is necessary to unlock other chapters, but there is an alternative in the form of short, complementary missions.

The game is graphically at a very high level, it contains many spectacular scenes of explosions and action, in single player there is also the possibility to watch and control the bullet as it travels through the air to its target in slow motion.

Modern Combat 5 has no in-app payments, dealing with piracy by requiring you to be online while playing. It is available in the App Store for 5,99 euros.

Matter

Matter is a new photo editing app from Pixite. If you are familiar with applications such as Tangent, Fragment or Union, you already know that this is not another one of dozens of applications that adjust contrast, colors, etc. and add filters. Matter allows you to insert 3D objects into photos, which are effectively integrated through the ability of objects to reflect light depending on the content of the image and create shadows.

It is possible to further manipulate the inserted objects widely, change their size and position (even embed parts in the image - e.g. water), transparency, color. The application can also generate animated images with moving objects, which it then exports as a short video. There are 64 3D objects, 11 styles (reflectivity, transparency, etc.), 63 colors and a fluid palette and tools for better integration of objects into images and shadow editing.

Through a clear application, you can easily create futuristic/abstract looking images, which, at least for now, are not so common on Instagram and other networks.

Matter is available in the App Store for 1,79 euros.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

With Michael Bay's big-budget Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coming to theaters soon, it's time to excite potential viewers with the game. In it, the player chooses one of the four main turtle characters, after which he fights against many opponents using a fairly rich menu of attacks. To initiate them, the finger can move across the display in three directions and also simply bump into it. By avoiding the attacks of the opponents, the player gets the opportunity to use a combo. Playing unlocks options for improving the effectiveness of turtle attacks, and of course there are also leaderboards.

The game includes in-app payments and is available on the App Store for €3,59.
