The acquisition of Poster by WordPress, video messaging on Skype, a new mobile game from CryTek, an upcoming office suite from the makers of Paper, a new X-COM: Enemy Unknown game for iOS and Chatology for Mac, a few important updates and some interesting discounts, that's the next release Weeks of applications.

News from the world of applications

The creators of WordPress bought the Poster app (15/6)

Automattic, the company behind the WordPress platform, this week bought Poster, an iPad application that was used to publish posts on the WordPress CMS platform. Poster was definitely one of the best apps for this purpose, with a great design and advanced features like editing user fields or supporting URL schemes in iOS.

Automattic was developing its own application, but it lagged far behind competing efforts, which is probably why the company decided to acquire Poster, which disappeared from the App Store after the announcement. We can only hope that instead of merging the WordPress apps, they cancel their own and re-release it under their Poster branding instead. The acquisition price was not disclosed.

Digg will introduce its Google Reader replacement next week (17/6)

Soon after the announcement of the end of Google Reader, the team behind Digg began preparing its own replacement for the popular RSS feed management service. In record time, they managed to create a basic version of the RSS reader, which users will be able to access both from a web browser and from the forthcoming Android application. Of course, an API is also included for developers who would incorporate Digg Reader support into their applications, such as Reeder, Newsify, Mr. Reader, Flipboard and more.

The first version will lack some functions, such as search, which will appear in the service only gradually. Digg Reader will be a freemium product, meaning that the basic features that Google Reader abounded in will be free, while more advanced features that will appear in the coming months will be charged for, which seems like a fairly healthy and user-friendly business.

CryTek Showcased New Tactical Game The Collectibles

CryTek, the game studio behind the graphically unsurpassed Crysis series and the CryEngine engine that powers it, is preparing a new game for iOS. CryTek already released one game on this platform last year, but it was a cute puzzle game that was quite a departure for the studio from the primary FPS genre. The new game has a working title of The Collectibles, and it's a third-person action game where you control a party of five fighting their way through a war-torn environment. Interestingly, the games should support the MFi game controllers that Apple introduced at WWDC 2013. The game will probably combine both gamepad control and touch control. It should be released in the second half of this year.

Paper developers raise $15 million to create office suite (18/6)

The creators of the Paper app are launching another app, this time it should be a revolutionary office suite that should bring the same innovations to this category as Paper among drawing software on the iPad. Studio FiftyThree received an investment of 15 million dollars to create an office suite. Many details about the upcoming project are not yet known, but it will not be easy to stand out among the competition. Office applications on iOS are controlled by Apple with its own iWork package, Google offers Docs as part of the Google Drive application, Microsoft has just released Office for the iPhone, and QuickOffice, which by the way is also owned by Google, is also popular.

New applications

X-COM: Enemy Unknown now also for iOS

Not too long ago, a new turn-based strategy game with RPG elements, X-COM: Enemy Unknown was ported to the Mac. Now the full-fledged title is also coming to the screens of iPhones and iPods, as 2K Games has released X-COM for iOS. Unfortunately, the port was not without a few compromises. The game requires a lot of system resources and the mission can be loaded even on the latest iPad mini only after restarting the device. However, the graphics suffered the most, which are significantly weaker compared to the console or PC version.

This is a full-fledged game with dozens of missions in which you repel an alien attack on Earth. It makes great use of touch control and you will also find an iCloud implementation here for saving and synchronizing positions between devices or Game Center. Despite the mediocre graphics, X-COM: Enemy Unknown for iOS is an excellent title, albeit at an unusually high price for a mobile game (half that of the console version).

Chatology

Flexbits, best known for their venture Fantastical, a smart calendar for both Mac and iPhone, have released a new app that aims to solve the problem of searching across various IM platforms, focusing in particular on iMessage and Google Talk/Hangouts. Searching the history of iMessage on Mac is a painful experience that will disable the application even for a few minutes with the constant rotation of the "beach ball". iMessage on Mac is generally a very untuned application.

Chatology can search for iMessage records in the system and provide a quick and hassle-free search. While this is an interesting solution, searching through the app history is a rather rare activity, and Flexbits charge $20 for the app, which is an exorbitant price for an app of this type, and there is a good chance that Apple will fix the issues in the upcoming version of OS X 10.9. However, if you need to quickly search your message history today, you can find the app on the developer's site.
